Carb questions
« on: July 22, 2007, 08:38:19 PM »
as a part of my summer project, i think im gonna get a carb rebuild kit. i have no clue if its been done before on my bike  by the P.O. but i know my dad hasnt in the 16 years that he's had it. i just took the carbs apart and now i'm wondering if there's anything i can do to clean them up or something of that sort. i know for sure i'm changing the fuel lines as they are cracked and rigid and i'm getting a fuel filter. the fuel filter im looking at is rather large, about 1 1/4in. diameter, but does anyone think it would be a bad idea seeing as it's for a tractor? the way i see it, it would just add to the unique-ness of the bike but if anyone knows otherwise, please tell me. also i was wondering if i have to start another topic everytime i need to ask something, like this right here, i could have put in my summer project topic but i have this feeling that nobody will see it.....

If the carbs have not been touched in 16 years, they need a complete replacement of rubber components at the very least bit. As far as a fuel filter, you need a filter for a gravity feed fuel system. A filter that is used with a fuel pump, won't work. Most bike shops have the clear type filters that have a sintered filtering element. Try www.visufilter.com, for a look at what is most commonly used on motorcycles.

Bing carbs can be a bit tricky and there are a few things you need to be observant about. Butterfly orientation for one and not mixing up the enricher valves for another. The Bing agency publishes a guide that I'm told is very good. http://www.bingcarburetor.com/bmw/bmw.html  there is even a printable diagram on this site. You can order your rebuild kit there as well. Try your local auto parts place for a dip can. It's a paint can full of carb cleaner and a little metal basket to hold your parts while they soak, or you can try a spray can of carb cleaner if things are not too gunked up. once you have the job complete youll need to balance the carbs, there are several methods for that. check back when you have them all cleaned up.

Ditto on the rebuild kit, though if you have a local BMW dealer they may be able to get the stuff for you as well as Bing.

As for your last question, it seems to be easier to keep up with a forum when the topics are separated.

Have fun,

Or, you can get a rebuild kit (with diaphragms) for less that $40 from Eurotech...
