It is not the first example of my putting something together only to realize that it is backwards, but this is weird

There is a photo of the offending front end reversal in my last restoration posting...Despite the fact that I had the sliders reversed it all went together as expected, including torquing the bolts at the bottom of the sliders that screw into the end of the damper rod...When I realized that they were reversed I simply removed the two sliders and reversed them and when I went to torque the bolts they both spun when I was not yet at the minimum value...I took the sliders off and the bolts threaded perfectly into the damper rods? I began to think that I also needed to reverse the forks. I tapped them out and reversed them but now neither of them will fit into the upper triple clamp from which they just came from?... When I clamp the slider in my vise and tighten the bolt screwed into the damper rod end it spins freely and I hear the spring turning inside the fork? ...So I think I have two problems, First can I just force a wedge into the triple clamp to spread them out a bit. Second why is the bolt spinning? Finally am I missing something other than my mind. Thanks, D2
