'79 & '84 - Frame
« on: October 15, 2012, 06:59:00 PM »
Hi,

I am selling my Krauser luggage rack, but I'm not sure of the evolutionary traits in the R65 models, so my question is: do the '79 and '84 R65s share the same frame dimensions?

Thanks

yes - there are detail changes, especially under the tank, where all the coils and relays are mounted.  But otherwise the are more or less the same beast

The luggage mounts should fit all.

I have sold on two sets of luggage and a screen.  One set went to a guy with a triumph triple of some sort and the other set went to a chap with an Enfield Bullet.  Minor adaption of bracketry required.  But do not be surprised when you sell them on to a non BMW customer.

There is a difference in wheel base and I think that may due to the swinging arm length.  They are different part numbers as are the rear sub frames but that might make no odds if the overall dimensions are the same.

Some time back I had a go a recording the differences between early an late models but didn't get it completely finished.

No, all twin shock models should be the same wheel base.  What might be different on the rear subframes is the mounts for the different seats, and the swing arms mount to different final drives, but I am not sure that there was much difference there.  The shocks for both models are the same length - which implies that the swingarms are the same length.....Just musing here.

I guess the the different seats is a good reason why the subframe part Nos are different. I'm not sure about the swinging arms and only assumed they might be different lengths because the part Nos are different and BMW's own figures show a small difference in wheel base 54.7" vs 55.1".  That is such a small difference though that it could also be the result of minor changes in suspension geometry.

As an aside we all know there can be difficulties with the swinging arm width accommodating some metric tires. I get the impression that 81 -85 models are slightly more accommodating than 78-80 models. That could also be a reason for the different part Nos.

That's my understanding as well.

The swingarms were made beefier in 81. That's the difference there - same dimensions otherwise.
