Hmm, oil pooling under my carb float bowl
« on: September 11, 2012, 07:26:26 AM »
I put my '79 R65 into the storage shed and noticed oil covering the outside of the bottom of the left carb float bowl  :-?  I didn't do an inspection to see where the oil was leaking from as I was out of time and had a plane to catch.  I'm not sure where the gearbox (engine) oil could be coming from.  I'm not at home so I can't run out and look at it right now.  It's been bothering me so I thought I should ask the SMEs here......
Any thoughts?

Much thanks

It's oil rfom the crankcase breather, it vents into the rubber tubes inside the airbox .

For some reason the left carb seems to be the one it leaks out of .

A few members here have positioned the clamps so that the adjustment screw is at the top, they say it stops the dripping .

If you keep the oil level at the top of the dipstick, that seems to ad  to  it, try running with the oil level at the mid-range .

What Bob says...  You may have a slightly over-filled crankcase oil volume. Airhead Street Knowledge recommends running, as Bob said, the oil level at about half dipstick.

Remember, check the oil with the dip stick unscrewed and resting on the filler boss.

Thank you for your replies.  I thought it was some type of engine seal that was the issue.  I'll warm up the bike and measure the oil on the dipstick.... I can continue with my plans to ride to Calgary for a bit of a holiday.

Again, much thanks.
Cheers

Dos Perro y Uno Gato,

Go ahead and check oil level with a cool engine. All dino juice will have had a chance to drain into the crankcase.

If I remember correctly, the previous owner had been using Spectro 4 20w50, which I continue to use; I read the dipstick while the engine was cold and it measured 3/4 full.
Crisis avoided.  Next.

The reason I asked about the oil weight, is I'm curious if lighter weight oils may be a bit more prone to being lost through the crankcase ventilation system .
