Drive Shaft Removal

Sorry to keep bugging you guys but Clymers manual isn't helping out that much...

I have removed the swing arm removed by my home made shaved down shaft socket and now I can't remove the drive shaft. Do I need a special tool to remove it? The Clymers book have a 6 sided bolt but on mine it's a round bolt.

The 4 bolts that hold the drive shaft to the out put flange on the transmission uses 10 mm 8 point box wrench. You want to leave the rear wheel on and hold down the brake to break them loose and when you torque them back.

I already have the swing arm removed.




I need the drive shaft removed so that way I can send everything out to be powder coated

You need a tool or fixture that looks like a McPherson strut compressor, it compresses the spring on the driveshaft and exposes a circlip that is just visible in your second picture, once that circlip is removed, the drive shaft comes apart and you can remove it from the swing arm housing .

Here's a blowup diagram of the drive shaft, hope it clears up the disassembly a bit .

Well, you can take the drive shaft and housing into one of their stores and see if they have anything that might do the job, other than that, you can make one from two plates of steel and 4 lengths of threaded rod, or if you have an airhead BMW shop in your vicinity, with the proper tool, it only takes a minute of two to get the drive shaft compressed and apart .

That tool, is good only for bikes up to the 1980 model year, in '81, the drive shaft was changed and a strong spring was added, that requires a different tool .

There's no picture associated with this tool, but from the description, it should be the correct one .

Thanks! My bike is '79 so I guess the one I posted up is the one I should be getting.

All R65's had the sprung drive shaft as standard.  It was the rest of the model range that had to wait till 1981 to catch up.  The R65 set the trend.....

As stated above, make yourself the tool out of some wood and some threaded studding with nuts at either end.  It only takes a short time and is very easy.
