rocker shaft orientation

"...an OFFSET punch prick, on some 1982...and all later ones. Both markings MUST face UP. The punch prick mark MUST also be outwards...that is, towards the valve cover....except that later shafts are angular drilled, and can be 180° reversed, when needed, to lengthen life."

I don't know if the link below will work for you, but its of an oversized picture of my left top end with the cover off:

My question is:  These punch marks are only visible if I were to slide the rocker shaft out of the assembly, right?  Furthermore, there would be one of four ways this shaft can be installed, where only one way is correct way, right?

I hope I'm making my question understood...?

I cannot tell from the angle of your picture -
what you want to be able to do, is stand right over the cylinder head, looking straight down so you can see the TOP end surface of the rocker shafts - it will look like a circle.  The punch marks should be at the 6 oclock position when looking straight down from above (toward your belly button, not toward the gas tank).

If there are no punch marks visible on the top of the shaft, but you have punch marks visible on the bottom end of the shaft (from lying on your back and looking straight up from below) then you've got the shafts upside down.

The punch surface helps to get the proper orientation for the needed lubrication of the rocker bearings as the oil trickles down to it along the top 2 cylinder studs.

I can see why I never noticed them before... with the film of oil over them it nearly makes them blend in.  Thanks.
