Well, it appears to me to be symmetrical.  Cap fits snug as a bug, now ;)

I had the same problem.  Gasket #17 is too thick.  I took a utility knife and sliced mine in half through the middle.  Fits great now, rattle is gone and I have a spare to use when this one goes bad in about 30 more years!
