broken coil bracket

Decided to take an after work ride on my '79 r65 but it was totally dead! After some loking around I discovered the front coil was hanging by the wires -the part of the frame that the bracket attaches to had broken off. I have re-attached the coil to the frame with 2 hose clamps with the ground clamped between the coil & the hose clamps, seems to run o.k. but is this a reasonable repair idea? Thanks, bill conquest

Well Bill, at least you finally got that out of the way.  Everyone with a '78-'80 will go through this at some point.

Yeah, that is the primary ground connection for the wiring harness.  You need a good solid spot.

I chose (can you believe I don't have a picture?) the corner of the bracket where all of the multi-pin connectors are held.  I drilled a hole through the corner, sanded the paint off, and with a 10mm nut&bolt and some dielectric grease, I was back in business.

I used zip ties for the longest time to hold that coil in place.  Finally last year I found hose clamps long enough to work.  They came out of the plumbing dept. from large diameter couplers.  Much more satisfactory for my bitchin' ride... [smiley=1drink.gif]

Same thing happened on My 1979 model.  I had two of the heavier bosch blues on mine.  I lost one of the frame bracket mounts and went through at least two brackets before I gave up.  

I have swapped my two coils for a twin output coil off of a K100, which I have mounted off the same tray I think Rob is taking about.

Seems to work fine.

when i bought my 79 it had the front coil mount broken and the 79 frame i bought also had the front coil mount broken and missing. all i did was clean it up real well and weld the hanger back on the back bone. i am guessing it will break again so i will start looking for a k100 coil like steve said and mount that on the rear coil mount.

Hey guys it's been a while since I posted but I too have the same trouble with broken coil mount on my 79. Will the coil off any k100 suffice or will I require a specific one i.e part no? Thanks in advance Steve.

I called up Rick at Motoelektrik  (wrong spelling) in Alabama and bought a single Dyna coil for the aft mount to power both plugs from the one dual output coil.  It came with a mounting bracket that bolts right on the aft coil mount (I hope it doesn't break too).  Works great.

So long as its a twin output coil Steve any K100 one will do the trick.

K100 dual output coil - the one I bought was second hand and cheap.  Got it from Motorworks I beleive.  It did have to be hacked about with a saw before I mounted it, however.  The mounts on it are for the K100 not the R65.  But they are reliable.  Nuff said.

Cheers Guys I will keep a look out for one on either ebay or local bike breakers for when i eventually get old copper tank back on the road. PS Mr thrang, I first came across your extensive relationship with the model on the r65 register thingy a few years ago and have often thought you may be a good source of local advice as I live relatively close to you down in sunny southport, so its good to have finally established some communication.
