The pale champagne color used on 79 - 80 bikes is Silver Beige. Same as my bike.

For an exact match, contact Holt BMW with the color code.

I've painted a few bikes, the most recent being my 1983 R65 taken back to its original 501 blau.

That job included the front fender (top and under), fuel tank -including the tunnel, two side panels (outside and in) plus the tail piece (outside and in). That job required one quart of color; keeping in mind that the quart ended up being a larger quantity due to the addition of the reducers and additives. I used a DIY spray booth and some prior experience. YMMV, as they say.

Are you planning to sand down most of the existing color on all the parts or is this a partial repaint? The lighter champagne color would do well being applied over a light color primer or even a thin coat of white paint... if you want the color to really "snap".

Share with us some additional info on what all you're planning to shoot and what color and condition is the current dress.

Thansk for the input, Monte..The bike is now the original color, though it looks loke the p.o. repainted it the original with out much prep work. The paint has begun to flake off in places & has "knee spots" on the tank. So, I plan to sand it down & prime/ paint it the proper way, all parts, including a fairing that looks like an Ls version. I'll be needing all kinds of advise as I go as i've never painted a bike or vehicle before, but I feel confident having this forum to go to! So please bear with my questions & thanks in advance.

Bill,

With the fairing now in the mix, I'd go ahead and purchase two quarts of color. You may have paint left over but that's not a bad thing. Properly stored, the paint will find some use later on. What can be tough is trying to buy another exact match quart somewhere "down the road".

A mantra for you, Bill:   Perfect Paint results from Perfect Prep... AaUmmmm

Release the dogs of war...  My comment is bound to stir up some responses for you, Bill.

I'm not that big of a fan when it comes to clear coat over color. Originally developed by the automotive manufacturers as a cheaper alternative to plain ol' paint, it has become something of a, "Gee, I gotta have me some clear coat" resto chant.

Yes, it does a fine job creating a deep look to the paint that sell cars. And it offers all sorts of environmental protection from tree sap and vented jet fuel and smog and on n' on.. It can also make a mediocre paint job look better.

I have some clear coat in my shop. It has its place and I've used it occasionally. However, my most recent motorcycle paint resto -the 1983 R65- was sprayed with an acrylic enamel with a gloss hardener additive. The BMW 501 blue is a metallic and the paint looks fantastic. No clear coat.

A 2-stage paint job will cost more simply because you'll be buying more product. The color goes on as a very thin matte finish and must be clear coated soon afterward. Timing is pretty important.

Remember, you can later shoot clear over an acrylic enamel if you choose to do so. Just use the same brand chemicals to insure proper bonding between the products. Always ask questions of your autobody supplier prior to laying out your cash.
