Omega Ignition
« on: May 11, 2011, 08:06:17 AM »
Yesterday I sent Omega an email with a question.  Today I received a reply saying that the company that supplied him was no longer in business.  He is going to shut down his web site.  Does anyone know if these ignition systems are available from any other source.

You may try the German firm Breindl-Grope, who sells the Omega-ignition among a lot of other things: On the German Ebay, their shop is found at http://stores.ebay.de/OMEGA-OLDTIMER or http://www.omega-oldtimer.de/shop/bmw/index.php?cat=92

Actually, I'm in the process of ordering from the company in Germany.  Given my experience so far...you may want to wait until you hear whether or not my ordering experience has been successful.

Here is a summary of my experience thus far:

I inquired about availability to the company in Canada on April 12th and was told the part had been on back order for a year and they had no supply in stock.  Later that day I sent an email to the company in Germany.  I received a price list back from them via email on April 13th with prices in Euro's.  Excited that it appeared I could order from them, I did the calculation for the ignition and coil combination I wanted and sent $318 to them via PayPal.  It took until April 19th until I received an email indicating that the company had accepted my payment.  Since I hadn't heard from the company or received any direct confirmation of my order, I sent an email to them on April 25th, simply asking when the order would ship.  Unfortunately I didn't hear back from the company...even after sending several more emails.  I finally initiated a complaint with PayPal on April 30th.  On May 9th I finally heard from the company indicating that the product was ready to ship and that they were only awaiting my payment.  I sent an email back indicating that I had already sent payment, that had been accepted by them, via PayPal.  Then on May 12th I had an email from PayPal indicating that the company had refunded my payment.  I had an email from the company yesterday indicating that they stopped shipping since I had requested a refund via PayPal.

Ok..long winded story...nearly finished...I sent the company an email this morning indicating that if the product is really now available for shipping, that I would resend the payment.  I also inquired as to whether or not they could supply additional orders.

I'll provide this thread with updates...but you may want to see how everything ends up with my order before potentially having a similar experience.  At this point I am cautiously hopeful that the order will go through, be correct, and install as easily as described.

Randy, interesting story.  I'll be curious to see how it works out.  I don't think I'm going to order from the German company unless you have a positive experience with them.

Yes, I'd like to know too.  I'm still interested in upgrading the ignition on my '79.

You don't need to get the coil.  That you can get from Rick (motoelectrik) or not replace your coils.  The Omega ignition will work with the two stock bosch coils.  Thank goodness mine still works.

There are other German sources for ignitions....

I have ordered stuff from Motoren-Israel and had good conversations with real Germans using an internet translator.  I send my emails (with apologies) with both the English and German translation just in case they can read English.  Then Silvia can have a good laugh at the translation...   ;)

Sorry for the delayed response - I ended up cancelling the order I placed directly with the Omega manufacturer in Germany.  I figured if it took so long for them to answer simple questions about the status of my order, then what would happen if I encountered any issues with the product.  While I like the sound of their product and ease of installation, the customer service, or lack of it, made me look elsewhere.

I ended up having a Boyer Bransden Micro Digital installed - http://www.boyerbransden.com/.  I also updated/upgraded my coils by purchasing the recommended version from http://www.motoelekt.com/.

Overall I am pleased with the Boyer Bransden so far.  I do have an extra points can and will probably take it along on long trips, just in case.

Another version to consider can be found at http://www.euromotoelectrics.com/v/vspfiles/assets/images/edl-ign-productinfo-v3.1.pdf.  It costs a bit more but claims to have advantages over other types/brands.

Hope this helps.

Randy
