OMG Beryl has started smoking
« on: December 29, 2011, 06:33:11 AM »
Blokes,
For a little while now, my R65 Beryl has started blowing blue smoke when you first start her up.

The smoke seems to dissipate as she warms up

what in the wide world of sports could be causing this??

Thanks in advance

Do you park the bike on the side stand ?

If you do, oil is seeping past the valve guide into the intake port and is burned off on start up .

If that is the case - don't do that anymore.

Park bike on centerstand, or, if it must go on the sidestand immediately after running, be sure you have solid footing and tip the bike to the right side (after shutting off engine) as far as you can manage and hold it for 10 seconds - this helps to drain oil out of the left rocker area down the pushrod tubes and into the crankcase.   Then, park bike on sidestand.

Or, park bike first on centerstand for 10 minutes or so, then switch to sidestand.

If the above doesn't take care of the problem, and smoke persists for more than ~ 10 seconds or so after starting up, then we can look into other causes.

Enjoy!

As Mike said, use the center-stand.  If it still smokes after that then I don't know.  On a conventional engine (vertical cylinders) oil sits/pools in the head and can run down/past loose valve guides.  On a boxer the valve stems/guides never really "sit" in an oil pool so don't know if guides would cause this or not but I suppose anything is possible.

The Dawg was one helluva skeeter killer when I first got it but it was worn out rings and the symptoms were different - only smoked after warming up for a few minutes...
