On the top-front mount, the tapered, hex-head bolt goes in first from the inside.
On the outside you should have a wave washer, then the nut.

On the lower front mounts, it is just a standard bolt and washer from the outside with a wave washer and then the nut on the inside.

Both of those are illustrated here: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=0364&mospid=51897&btnr=46_0074&hg=46&fg=05

The top shock mount bolts are M10x45 (mine are fine thread, I believe).
The bolts go on from the outside with a wave washer under both the head of the bolt AND the nut, as illustrated in this image: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=0364&mospid=51897&btnr=33_0625&hg=33&fg=25

I buy my metric wave washers at both Lowe's and Home Depot. Handy and priced right.

Well that's interesting. Mine are the other way around which explains why the battery is a tight squeeze past the end of the bolts. Hands up anybody who still has the decorative caps #9 in the diagram.

My inclination exactly as we want that rear sub frame to be rigid which is why it's always been a puzzle to me that the recommended torque for these bolts is only 11 - 12.5 ft lb  Without checking the exact figures that's way lower than typical for a high grade 8mm nut and bolt. The only reasoning I can think of for such a cautious figure is that in this location a sheared bolt is just as dangerous as a loose one actually more so as there would be no warning of failure.

I think I compromised between what the book said and what felt right and gave them 15 ft lb

All of my caps are still there !!!!

Kinda surprising, as just about everything else made  of plastic has long since deteriorated !!!!

Barry, that was one of the many improvements made to the '81-on models.

Something else to add  to the list of differences which gets longer all the time. Also probably means I never had the decorative caps.
