82 R65LS Side Stand
« on: September 04, 2011, 09:50:53 AM »
Yes, still working on getting her up to snuff.  But getting closer.  I have a question on the side stand.  I noticed mine is really loose, seems my the bushings are worn, the side stand sags some. and can be manipulated manually vertically.  I checked MAX's parts fiche for replacement parts, and they only listed the rubber grommet that goes over the boot hook.  Are the OEM still available?  Has any ever used the Brown side stand?  Bob's BMW advises they have the Brown specifically for the R65LS, around $160.00 USD.  How about the Farley side stand, any experience with it?

The Surefoot sidestand works very well.

The bush and screw weren't available from the BMW parts dealer in Western Australia that I use.
I turned up a new bush on a lathe and modified a M8 countersunk bolt. It took almost all of the play out of the sidestand. I should get another 25 years out of it.
The factory pivot bolt has the threaded section bearing inside the bronze bush so it wears quicker than it should. I made my bolt with the unthreaded shoulder passing through the bush.

I would buy an aftermarket stand pronto - Brown or Surefoot.

My stand failed on my bike that resulted in a dropped bike and a dented tank

It was not the tang on the frame or any bushes that failed - it was the stand itself that broke, where it mounts to the frame either side of the frame tang.

It was slack so I had plenty of warning...pity I did not take action. >:(

The surefoot is the business - I have one on my R100 as well.

Cheers

The original bushing in my '82 LS sidestand was a a spherical-shaped piece of steel.  I replaced it with a BMW-sourced bronze cylindrical bushing.  The stand still has a little play but is secure and the bike stands up properly.

anyone that has fitted the surefoot sidestand,
does yours clear the centre stand? or do you have to juggle the two?

based on feedback I purchased from MAX's BMW a Brown Side Stand.  It took all of 5 minutes to install.  No issue whatsoever with fitting.  Much better stand than the OEM.

The surefoot stand does clear the centre stand but you have to extend it in order to pull the bike on to the centre stand. Then retract it if you like, when bike is on the stand. Also when getting off with surefoot extended, the stand sometimes gets a bit in the way of your left foot, it can feel a clumsy movement until both feet are on the ground. I often feel more confident then,  with a hand on the front brake!

It seems the exhaust is in the way of tightning the side stand on my '82 non-LS.  Any thoughts?
