Bob's suggestion worked like a charm [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif] However when I checked out the bulb it was fine...it looked ok and had continuity. I put it back in, reconnected the tach., connected the battery and turned on the ignition...I had a strong red light greeting me which went out when I started the engine. So i got off pretty easily. Something must have loosened up. I'll WD40 all the other connections for the turn signals as I put the headlight fairing back on. Thanks every one for your help.Happy Dave

Excellent!

Just to make sure - the light didn't immediately go out upon starting - more like when the engine reached 1100 RPM or thereabouts?

Yes, and when I let it idle back down to a stall (Engine was cold) I could see the weak red light start to come back on, which I believe is normal. thanks for asking

Those 'wedge' type lamps, in my opinion aren't the best for this application, I'd rather have the 'bayonet' type, where you push down and rotate a half turn or so .

Might I suggest not using WD40 to treat electrical connections. This heavily advertised, do all elixir quickly evaporates and leaves a gunky film that grit absolutely loves to co-join with. Soon afterwards, you will again begin to experience the hassles of intermittent electrical contact.

Swing by your local Radio Shack or electronics store of choice. There all several products available that will clean and protect terminals without leaving problems in their wake. A small tube of dielectric grease will also help keep safe those electrical terminals for many years.

If you do use WD40, flush the connectors with the terminal cleaner afterwards.

Bob, I never even took the bulb out of the holder so I didn't know which type of bulb it was. I can say as I tried to get the top part of the headlight fairing  in place the left turn signal light bulb launched itself skitering across the garage floor :-?. so based on this I would agree with you about the wedge shape bulb.

Montmil I guess I'll reconsider the WD 40 bath  [smiley=bath.gif]. I was thinking of getting diaelectric grease for the battery terminals, so I will do that and use it on other connections. Thanks guys,Dave

Hello everybody, I new here, just got a 1980 R65, the guy I bought it from was trying to turn it into a cafe racer :/, anyways he cut the wiring harness off at the front only leaving key wires and head light. Im in the process of getting a new harness, but in the mean time I was wondering if i could get info and all the wires, what color does what so I can at least have a charging battery wile I ride, kinda sucks to have to put it on a charger every night and running out of juice wile ridding, not fun hanging out on the side of the road here in Az in the summer.
Any know where I can find OEM harness for cheap? Might as well do the whole thing wires are getting quite tuff and dont flex very easily.

Thanks in advance
Tyler

I found the wiring diagram here.

Here's a document that explains the Din standards used in European wiring diagrams including the colour abbreviations
