Old Dawg, New Trick.
« on: August 04, 2011, 05:16:16 PM »
Sometimes my R65 will chuff a bit of smoke out the LH exhaust on the first startup of the day.  A month ago I found out why.

My Georgia BMW club friend rides a 1200CL (chrome head?).  We were taking about odd things our BMW's do while working on a F650 Funduro.  I happened to mention this annoying thing that sometimes happens to my R65.  She gave me look I used to get from my mother (HA!) and said that I need to park the bike on the center stand and not the side stand if I was going to leave it alone for a few hours.  The oil thrown about the engine will, over time after shutdown, run into the LH cylinder.  You can still use the side stand for doing errands (lots of short starts and stops.)  But once you shut down for the day, onto the center stand it must go.

So I have been doing this religiously and WALLA - no more chuffing oil out the LH cylinder on the first start of the day.

The old dawg has learned a new trick...   8-)

Bill, Bill, Bill...

Y'all need to check in here more often, ol mon. That little tidbit has bounced through just about every section on this here forum. Plus others. Did you remember to ask her how to make your Beezer stop leaving its spore? [smiley=grin.gif]

OK, here's another hot ticket item... turn off the petcock when you park the R65 on its center stand or, heaven forbid, the side stand. You don't wanna trade oil for gasoline. Wait. Isn't something like that what our politicos are doing? I know it involves some sort of "gas". [smiley=tongue.gif]

Now, go get your wheels in the well.

I don't know how but I missed the memo on the sidestand thing...proof that I still have stuff to learn.   8-)

Now the BSA marking its territory is a whole nother thang.  I don't know if it is possible for a BSA not to ooze something.   ::)

Afternoons are so hot I've been parked under the AC, sifting through several 10+ year-old issues of the Brit rag, Classic Bike. BSA and Triumph, for sure, but so many other marques.

One article showed photographs of 700+ BSA-mounted enthusiasts who turned up at the long since closed BSA works at Armoury Road, Small Heath Birmingham just because... truly amazing interest in vintage motorcycles.

Hope you are exercising your BSA on a regular basis. [smiley=thumbup.gif]

I can't get too excited about a few puffs of smoke on start up.  I use the center stand when it's at home in the garage, but when I park it at work for the day I use the side stand.

But Ed, your co-workers will think you're riding some out-dated, thirty-year-old, farm implement of a motorcycle when... Hey, wait a minute...  [smiley=laugh.gif]

OK I only use the center stand. I don't trust the side stand and to be honest its easier to just use the center stand. It takes me longer to get the side stand down than to put the bike on the center stand. Maybe you guys are getting weak in your old ages. ;)

But thanks this thread reminds me I need to put the newer style center stand on I just got.

Atleast your not riding the BSA.  I've hear it described as Lawnmower technology.

I take pride in being a "center stander". Everybody these days rides up, flips down a side stand and leans it over. I like being different. Kind of like my flying friends who take pride in being tail draggers.
Keep your bike in good repair: motorcycle boots are not comfortable for walking.

Both my personal aircraft were taildraggers. As my instructor used tell me, "Stay on those rudder pedals until you shut down at the hangar door."

On occasion, his words rang true. ;D

I think the Airheads look better while sitting on the center stand. Front wheel cocked to the side, nose wheel up, people walking by seem to notice the classics. You may notice my avatar.

All BMW's, K bikes especially will do that...
Try a full smoke startup on a K1200LT, Folks will think you've blown the engine... A K engine will smoke for 5 minutes if it gets enough oil on the wrong side of the rings..

now I need to start working out a little bit because it has been a little complicated for a skinny guy like me to use that central stand... dropped the bike twice!!

Does your R65 have the "Civil War mini-ball on a stick" centerstand foot pad? I believe it was with the 82-83 models that the centerstand changed a bit and added a nice square-ish pad for your foot. i swapped one onto my '81. The '83 already had the good 'un. Much easier but still not a flip-flop footwear chore.

Perhaps someone might confirm if the swap will work on the 79-80 Mks.

Me thinks the new K1600GT will not have this problem with its transverse 6 cylinder.  Do I really want a bike that big and that fast?   :D

Yes, I have fitted the newer stand to my 1980 and highly recommend it, page 2 of the thread below describes the fitting. Its pretty simple to change if you can manage to source a new stand

http://www.bmwr65.org/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1310359576

Sorry to hear you dropped the bike, the problem with the center stands is that when they become worn, it becomes really difficult to get the bike off the stand, makes a drop more likely as you end up off-balance, however this difficulty can be fixed by having some welding done on the old stand, Barry describes how, also in the above linked thread.
