The Green and Black Wires
« on: April 01, 2011, 04:57:39 AM »
G'day, the ignition switch on my [84 R65] has a plug with two green/black wires going into it.  Can someone please tell me what it's for.  I've studied the wiring diagram in my Clymer Manual and cant figure it out.

I'm doing a repair on the fairing because it came unstuck last weekend so while the fibreglass is drying I've been tinkering. I'm trying to figure a way of installing the Vapor Instrument without messing up the existing wiring.  Thanks

The digital Vapor needs no connection to any of the BMW's wiring.

There's a small power lead that goes to the battery, the speedometer pickup lead runs down the fork leg and a tach lead can either hook up hard-wired or simply wrapped around a plug lead for inductive pickup.

The Vapor turns itself on as the magnet passes the pickup head. The Vapor shuts itself off automatically after a few minutes of being idle/parked.

G'day Monte, I've seen your Vapour install threads and they are great.  I just cant seem to get myself to cut the existing wires off.
My bike has a S-Fairing so most of the instrument cluster is covered.  The cow tongue is missing. I dont really need to install the vapour as the existing instruments work but, I bought the vapour for another bike and now I'm messing about with the idea of putting the Vapor on this unit and trying it out before hacking the wires.
The fairing has no instruments installed so I can mock up a 'dash' in one of the holes with the warning lights etc., including the generator light.
If the Green/Black wire plug (which hasn't been plugged in since I've had the bike) offers an 'igition ON' take off point which would be handy for the Vapor so I wondered what it was actually for before I statred the procedure.
BTW - was there a thread with step by step wiring elimination procedures?  Thanks again dude!

The connector you're talking about, it's not connected to anything, just sitting there ?

If this is the one, its for extra instruments, voltmeter and clock .

I used this unused connector for an aftermarket voltmeter.....owners manual lists it  as # 48 on the schematic in back of manual:"connection for optional equipment voltmeter" Works great. Did not work OK for GPS cradle, if I remember correctly...I couldn't get a solid ground.
1983 R65LS - LRB still my favourite!? 1988 Honda NX250, "Toodles Too" and a Suzuki DR650, "Calypso." All stored in the "Brrrmmm Closet".
