If you have the original BMW tool kit, there is a short 10 mm wrench in there that will work .

You are also going to have to place something like a long brass punch, or other similar tool into the universal joint to keep the drive shaft from rotating while loosening the four 12 point bolts that hold the drive shaft to the transmission output flange .

Hi Bob,

i just put the bike in gear to undo the swing arm to trans bolts. Replaced the gearbox a few years back so was fine doing that part. But i ideally want to remove the bevel box from the swing arm and there are 4 12mm bi hex bolts that none of my spanners will fit on! and all my sockets are Wall-drive so they dont work either. I see James Sherlock stock new stainless ones that are normal bolts...

Never taken bevel box apart from swingarm before is it straightforward??

anyway thats me done  for the day.

Once again more pics on

The final drive comes off easily, loosen the nuts so there is a gap between them and the case, then take a piece of wood and a hammer, a few good hits with the hammer on the wood and the final drive should come loose .

Another Question.

I dont have any fittings for the battery carrier. Im about to order teh spokes top-plate and thumb screws but also listed are retaining straps, are theses needed? i cant remember any of my previous airheads having these.

Also Motorworks.co.uk list Hicap Starting upgrade, is this worthwhile? have peopler fitted such upgrades?

as an update most areas now have 2 coats of primer on them some areas have four.
one last coat or primer this evening and then Topcoat tomorrow! :-)

And then the nice task or polishing the starter housing and alternator cover! :-(

Ben,

Your R65's battery carrier utilizes two (2) rubber straps to secure the battery; not the top plate, threaded rods and thumb screws of other BMWs. Your photos show a shot of the battery carrier. The small half-round hooks at top and bottom of the carrier are where the metal anchor pin components of the rubber straps attach.

BTW, clicking on the small photo images of your F'Book page brings up a message that says, "The photo is currently unavailable" so I'm working off the little images.

Hi Monte.
My R65 is a mono tho. with a 30ah battery. Does this make a differance or not?

new link hopefully that works.

good news is exhausts have been taken away to have threads drilled out of them.
I am now making a nice long list of parts to get from james sherlocks.

I would imagine that if the battery matches the base plate of the battery carrier and the height is similar, the rubbers will fit. They do stretch a bit, as they are supposed to do.

Still no joy getting in a larger image after clinking the thumbnails. The large image flashes for a nano second, then the Not Available message pops up. Perhaps only your Facebook friends can get the 'big picture'?

Hi Monte,
have made album open to everyone now so you should be-able to see the pics.

Thanks for info re battery holder. will check with James Sherlock before i order as i only recall the metal spokes being there before she was laid up.

just painted the top tube with the black enamel, as was slightly woried what the finish would be like. but apart from forgetting to clean after a light sand (thus i have small dust particles in teh paint) it looks good and the  paint "flows" really nice to leave a perfect finish with no brush marks at all!

I am thinking i will paint the tank and other parts using the same paint system! But what colour to chose?  Im thinking red....

Hi all.

Finally separated the swing arm from the bevel box grinded a ring spanner down. Have fibreglassed the coweling and filled the holes where the little rack used to be. oh and have also put the fuse box in which seems like the best solution.
next on the list is painting the tank cowling and other bits.

pics on http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=47322&id=100000429314611&l=a2cc916f0d

anyway weather is great here so im off for a climb!

cheers
Ben
