Right side of engine...different than left?
« on: January 16, 2011, 06:53:48 PM »
The title is misleading, but when I was scrubbing down the gunk on the (uninstalled) engine today, I thought I found that the cooling ribs on the right side were cracked (right behind the front cover).  As I looked closer, they appear to have been machined down.  I think the frame ran through there.

So the question is, why?    Is the engine slightly off center?  Why would it be machined down on one side and not the other?

It is definitely off centre a few mm towards the driver shaft side. Don't know why for sure but you have to assume it's something to do with drive shaft alignment.

It may be to compensate for one cylinder being further forward than the other balancing the torque, the swinging arm will be in different positions depending on the load the bike is carrying so alignment shouldn't be a big issue on the final drive.
