Mike,
I have a photo essay on timing chain replacement in the Photo Gallery that may be of some help.
http://www.suraklyn.com/r65_forum_gallery/thumbnails.php?album=35Yes, the OEM timing "scratch mark" on the crankshaft sprocket is hidden by the crankshaft outrigger bearing. Grrr...
I made the error of not clearly marking the crank sprocket tooth with the cam sprocket's dimple
before pulling the timing chain. I was anxious about getting the crank and cam gears aligned during the chain refit.
I ended up pulling the valve covers -spark plugs out- so I could watch the rocker arms as I rotated the cam. I positioned the
left side rockers at TDC and noted the cam gear's dimple was at the 12 o'clock position. The crank was then rotated to position by watching the flywheel marks line up in the timing window. This put the correct crank sprocket tooth at 6 o'clock; right on top of the cam sprocket dimple.
Even a blind hog finds an acorn now and then.
A slow hand-rotation of the engine revealed no interference. Multiple rotations all checked out. I cleaned the crank sprocket tooth and painted it white... at least it was white when I buttoned up the engine.
Next time I'm in there, I'll confirm the proper crank tooth
before removing the chain.
Hope the photos are helpful.
