Project Frankenbeemer gets a heart
« on: November 17, 2010, 05:53:08 PM »
This past Saturday I drove from Columbus, OH to Chicago to pick up the "heart" of my Frankenbeemer project. The engine is from an '83 R100RT with 14k miles on it. I bought it on Ebay from a guy with 100% good feedback, so I'm not too worried about the engine being bad (oil was very clean and the engine turned over by turning the flywheel). I got the complete engine (incl. starter, alternator, distributor, carbs, boots, exhaust pipes and oil cooler) for $860...a great deal. I'll start on it right after Christmas and will have it going by Spring. I measured the width of the R100 engine vs. the R65. and there is about an inch difference per side. This engine has the Nikasil liners and appears to have the same pigtail connectors as my R65LS. I hope it's a plug-n-play set-up. I'm leaving the 3.56 gearset in the bike, so this thing will probably accelerate like a rocket. I'll keep you guys posted on the progress. BTW, has anyone ever grafted the front portion of R100 pipes (38mm) to the rear portion of the R65 pipes (35mm)? My plan is to have the two welded together and then have the pipes and crossover dechromed and coated satin black by Jethot Coating...I'll be able to keep the stock LS mufflers (which will make this bike a real sleeper...it will appear stock).

Please note...I downloaded the photo from Picasa after reducing the size of the photos to 4x6, but it is still showing up billboard size. I found that clicking on the small thumbnail above the photo will bring it up in the 4x6 size. Not sure why it's not showing up that way on the posting...any ideas or help would be appreciated. I will post more photos on Coppermine and link to them.

A couple of things come to mind with you installing the 1000 cc engine into your bike .

There are various sizes of intake tubes for the airbox, depending on the engine displacement .

I don't know if it will be an issue with you using the exhaust headers for the 1000 cc engine, but there are clearance issues with the thermostatic bypass valve for the oil cooler on a stock R65 .

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

Thanks Bob...I assume the bypass valve is the portion of the oil cooler that bolts to the oil filter access opening. I'll take plenty of pictures during this project and post plenty of notes. I'll also have plenty of questions :).

I hope you don't mind, silver, but I had to resize the picture in your original post!

The lower airbox for the R65 is the same as for the R100 (according to the Max BMW online parts fiche). Is the frame width the same between the R65 and the R100 where the oil filter access is located? Is the oil filter bypass valve's fit in an R100 tight? It appears the R100 pipes may stick out from the frame a few mms further than the R65's pipes, but I won't know conclusively until the engine is set in the frame and I can test fit the pipes and figure where to cut them and graft them together. I may pull the 650 engine next week and stick the new one in. Will I have to pull the trans out, or can I just loosen the swingarm bolts and slide the swingarm and trans back a few inches? I'm impatiently waiting on my Haynes manual to arrive from GB (Lucky Lou...see if you can check with the postal authorities over there and expedite its arrival in Ohio...LOL).

Yes, you will need to remove the transmission before removing the engine - if only to make it light enough for one person.

The top of the airbox may be different if only for the shape & size of the horns.  I guess there are a few different versions.  Probably to create optimum air flow for the particular engine.

I'm not sure about the frame difference around the oil filter cover.  If it were me, and I lived where you do (aren't you in northern Ohio?), I would not even mess with the oil cooler.  I'd get a non-cooler center post and cover and never look back.
