So there I was in the dark, no shoulder, pushing..
« on: October 29, 2010, 02:10:32 PM »
Last night I was out for a spin, and I was riding along about 50 or 60 mph when I had a sudden dramatic loss of power.  As soon as I coasted to a stop the engine quit.  The battery seemed to have a full charge, the motor turned over fine but wouldn't catch.

Plenty of fuel coming through the newish lines, I replaced the coil with a dyna coil about 4 or 5 years ago.. anybody have any thoughts?

The bike in question is an '86 with an '84 motor, and I just (about 150 miles ago) replaced the wiring harness.

'76 CB400F ~26000 miles. non-runner!

Remove the spark plugs from the cylinder, place them on the cylinder fins .

Turn your ignition key on and off, every time you turn the key on, both plugs should fire, it's a quick test for your ignition system .

If you don't get any spark, you need to go back and check the wiring, some wire connection may have come loose .

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

I agree with Bob's suggestion - chances are good that you had a connector that wasn't firmly in place, and chose that moment to come loose.   Pay particular attention to the ignition key connectors and the connectors at the ICU and coil(s).

And the kill switch.  Move that back & forth several times to make sure it isn't malfunctioning.

Yikes

Matt, your symptoms sound similar to my 2 bean can failures, due to dying hall effect vane sensors.  The sensor is not too expensive to replace but definitely a job to do on the shop bench and not a roadside fix.

Finally had a chance to post the resolution.. apparently the loose nut fairy had been hanging around my R65 quite a bit. (You know the guy.. cold beer in one hand, wrench in the other, dumb look on his face..)  The battery connector had come loose, but even after that no dice.  I took the tank off and the ignition coil was very loose in the mount.  I just tightened it all back up and bingo! back in business.

Now that it's reasonable temperatures in Texas I'm loving the commute again.
