Transmission Input Spline Lube
« on: November 03, 2010, 01:26:54 PM »
I finally got to remove the transmission from my '82 LS for an input spline lube .

I wasn't looking forward to this, as I've found a lot of less than desirable work performed on this bike .

1 hour 45 minutes from when I opened the tool box, until the transmission was sitting on the work bench .

Good news is, both the splines on the shaft and the clutch splines are in great shape and were properly lubed .

The input shaft seal is still good and I don't see any seepage from the rear main seal and oil pump cover seal, so I'm not even going in there at this point in time .

Clutch disc still has 15-20,000 miles of wear left on it, the bike will probably get a few thousand miles a year, so the next spline lube will require a clutch replacement .

About the only thing I have found wrong so far, that the threaded stud at the upper left hand corner, came out of the engine with the nut, most likely cause is the spacer that sits between the air-box and transmission mounting 'ear' was missing .

So far that looks like that might be the only part I have to order, if that's the worst I find, I'll be quite relieved .

But now I have to clean up everything I took apart .

Something out of ordinary happened when I pulled the rear axle out, the flanged or 'hat' spacer on the left hand side, pulled through the seal, the spacer was seized on the axle .

Looks like I need to use some fine emery paper on the axle and the inside of the spacer to get some clearance .

Bob,

May be because at one time the bike sat for an extended amount of time with moisture.  Look for corrosion on the axle or pock matks and also inspect the top hat spacers for wear from the seal wipers.  You should be able to clean the axle up with ±400 grit or steel wool, clean well and apply a small amount of grease and be done with it as you mentioned.  Did you see any corrosion or rust in the rear bearings?

I just replaced the seals and cleaned and lubed the bearings about two weeks ago, so I was surprised that the spacer stuck to the axle .

I went over the axle with steel wool before reassembly and put a small amount of wheel bearing grease on the axle before reassembly .

There must be a small burr or something on the axle that I didn't notice, or possibly the spacer has a small irregularity to it .

I used a paint scraper and a screwdriver handle to tap between the spacer and the step in the axle, and it came free quite easily .

I was going to replace the spacer on the right side, as I installed the longer one, and I wasn't thrilled with the large gap between the wheel and final drive housing, so now I get to do the job all over again .

They surely keep our projects active!

Bob, do you install the brim of the top hat inside or outside of the seals?

Inside of the seals .

Need to get back to work, it's already 90 F. in the garage at 1245, forecast high is 95 F. today, which means the garage will be at least 100 F. by 1500 .

Finished the job late this afternoon .

I made a few errors in reassembly, I was reinstalling the carbs,, when I realized that I forgot to put the fuel line in before putting the air box back on, DOH .

I got the missing spacer on one of the transmission studs sorted out, just used a couple of washers, until I was satisfied with it  .

Only parts I need to get are the metal sleeves that go into the rubber 'horns' in the airbox, there is some sort of metal tube in there, obviously not the correct part, looks like it was cut with a hacksaw, the rubber tubes between the airbox and plastic tube that connects to the carb looks like it was cut from a radiator hose, again it kinda fits, but not quite .

Got the rear wheel spacers replaced with what's supposed to be there .

I forgot to remove the rear brake shoes from my other LS, as the rear brake on the '82 is not right, I think there are standard r65 brake shoes on it, I'll get to that tomorrow .

I'll get this bike done eventually !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You should try 40 year old BritBikes and then ride them across the country like you would your BMW!  That'll make a MAN of you (either that or a crazed lunatic).   :D
