R65LS makes a statement when NOT used
« on: October 09, 2010, 10:11:42 AM »
My R65LS known as LRB on this forum waited patiently whhind in the Brrrmm Closet while I took the new Bonneville for my 7 weeks away to NH, VT and Cape Breton. Even with Stabil, Sea Foam and premium gas in his tank, he did not start 2 days ago. Tried to start but stalled immediately. So off with the carb bowls. Seemed like too much gas in the left side bowl as it spilled out which I never had a problem with before. The rightside bowl was at a level that it didn't spill out when taking it off. So I did what Oak always said:  I toggled the floats up and down manually. Rightside shut off no problem. Leftside dribbled until toggled some more and then it shut off the gas flow. Bike started right up!! So junk (gas varnish) on the jet making it stick? Sounds like it to me and just goes to show us that an unused bike is an unhappy bike...will get even with you and if not too put off will allow you to follow the 'KISS' principle.
I suppose I should be a bit cognizant that the jet may be the culprit, not the gas varnishing up over the longish down-time? Is there some rubber around the jet I should be suspicious of deteriorating? Is there any chance there is an early warning here of 'something'? Logic hints at me that if the jet is a close-fitting item which it must be, then if it lost some material off it, I'd not have gotten the gas to stop, period. Logical? I've never done any work on the carbs. Gas mileage is perfect and he runs great. Took a 200 mile jaunt and LRB is a happy puppy now!!  BTW gas line is new and of the uptodate kind..not the cloth covered type anymore.

Just another thing: Use an impeccably clean, preferable white like a margarine tub, to collect the gas when checking for debris when you toggle the floats. Makes it easy then to see IF there is debris. Might help you decide if the float level is the culprit or dirt is the culprit preventing the gas flow from stopping. Logic from a lady! :-/ ::)

The 'needle', or float valve has a rubber tip, with age it hardens and doesn't seal as well .

As for debris in the fuel, if you have the fine mesh screen in the tank, or a plastic mesh screen in the bottom of the fuel tap, the only other place for it to come from, is the fuel lines .

The weather here in the suburb of 'HELL' that I live in, has finally cooled down, got a lot of work done on the '82 LS the past four days .

Looks like it might be out on the road for a 'shakedown' ride in about a week or so .

It's a duplicate of Sue's LRB .

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!
