The Boyer instructions (or their web site) should say how many degrees advance the timing is at full advance, and you'll need a timing light to do it.

I still like valves and your trainers were right they didn't go away completely. Valves are still used today in guitar amps and top end hifi kit. Transistors were already around in 1970 when I was taught valves. I liked them because they were so easy to understand you could sort of see them working.

.....maybe I could design an ignition amplifier using valves ??  perhaps not as finding a 200volt  HT supply might be tricky on a bike.
