transmission spline

ok after hearing and seeing the other posts i am going to so this.  low miles with an unknow history.

if i just want to lube the spline do i have to take the tranny all the way out? can i crack the two and get some grease or lube or what ever i am supposed to put on the splines with out having to blow it all the way apart?

i dont have my book in front of me because i am at work, so that is why i say i dont know what it takes for lube.

You can pull everything apart for about an inch and get some grease in there, I think snowbum has a procedure written up on this.  All of the purists will start signing and muttering incantations unless you pull the tranny.  On an unknown bike that would probably be best but the way I look at it pulling it back is better than nothing.

I had 40000 miles on my 82 R65 when I found that you should lube the splines every 10000 miles. When I was putting on 20000 to 25000 miles a year on my bike I would just pull the transmission back far enought to lube the splines. I would do that in the middle of the riding season. At the beging of the riding I would pull the transmission to get a good look at the splines and would inspect the clutch at the same time. I had a friend  who bought and 82 R65LS that had the splines stripped at 4000 miles.  The other bikes I bought used the first thing I dide was to pull rear wheel and check final splines, pull transmission and check input splines. change all the fluids. Now that I am not riding that much every other year I pull the transmission back far enough just to lube.

S%!T, now I'm having nightmares. I rode all the way to S.F. and back and the clutch feels fine but,but. Arrrgh, there are monsters in my  clutch case and they want LUBE! Sheesh , now I'll just have to do it already! Found this and thought it was pretty good. I like pretty pictures.

Oh and I forgot.  If you're going to do the spline you might as well lube the Throwout Bearing on the other end of the tranny.  Ah the joys of air head maintenance....

Yeah, I'm starting to get paranoid as well.  I started into Beemers pre-internet and never knew that these things were supposed to be greased, so never did and never had any problems.  I now have two bikes that probably should be greased before heading to Ken's in a couple of weeks...

Geesh, I didn't intend to turn the whole forum into a bunch of paranoid spline-lubers,
but if anyone else can benefit from my unfortunate experience and avoid this costly
repair, that would be a good thing !

OK, y'all shamed (scared) me into it!  I pulled the tranny back (snowbum method) on the ol' lady's '84, cleaned and greased the input splines.  It was pretty much dry but no rust yet so I used one trimmed acid brush and lacquer thinner to clean and one to grease up the splines on the input shaft.  

I guess it was due as the needle bearing assembly on the clutch arm pivot was pretty much frozen up.  I was able to get everything rolling inside and re-greased it, the throwout bearing was fine and still well lubed and was the nice ball bearing type instead of the Torrington bearing...

I did a little experiment on the lube, I had used the BMW red #10 grease in the past but it seems to have fallen out of favor with all the "experts" lately.  I have used Valvoline semi-synthetic wheel bearing grease for years, on both wheel bearings and steering head bearings - great stuff.  I was rooting around for my tub of moly grease and happened to read on the Valvoline can that it contained moly so I gave it a try, we'll see in a couple of years how it held up.  My thought is that since it's has a synthetic component maybe it won't dry out as fast, being a wheel bearing grease it's sorta sticky, and it has the moly component for wear resistance with the splines sliding against each other.

We're riding up to the Boxerworks Rally in a couple of weeks so I will at least have the peace of mind on the splines...

PLUS, the lathe sure turned out handy.  I have a thin-wall socket that has fit every other Beemer I've tried it on except this '84 R65!  I chucked it up in the lathe and shaved off a few thou and it now fit's great!
