Front disk lock for R65?
« on: June 13, 2010, 04:43:08 PM »
My '81 has twin ATE front disks, with 6mm/~0.25-inch heat-dissipation holes in the disks. To date, I have not seen a disk lock in a dealer's parts department with a small enough shackle to fit these holes. Anyone been able to find one?

Follow-on query: Anyone have an opinion as to whether a shackle that small would be a deterrent?

You could always 'open up' a couple of holes in the disc so the lock fits .

You can drill out 2 that are opposite each other, so as not to effect any balance, if it even matters anymore due to the usual heavy grooving the disc's acquire .

If you do drill out the holes, make sure you chamfer the hole, so there is no metal left sticking up and gouging the pad .

Disc locks with 6 mm pin do exist, I have one, marked "Xena" (but it doesn't look much like Lucy Lawless). It seems quite a solid piece of hardware. I forget where I got it. However I recall there was a thread on this a few months ago and I think it was reported they are available in the US. If you don't get lucky let know and I'll look into it here in UK.

PS Altritter I'm very intrigued that you describe the holes in the disc as being for heat dissipation. Over here we've always taken it that they are to get rainwater off. Early Japanese discs were chrome plated for looks and had no holes, they were a disaster in rain -- about zero braking until the water dried out, then locked wheel! Things have improved a lot.

You are not looking hard enough!
Kriptonite make a 5mm disk lock. Xena the 6mm.
Do a google search
Motorcycle superstore lists them on their site.

It was strictly a SWAG on my part. The water-removal concept makes sense; I hadn't really thought about it that way. My notion sprang from two thoughts—(1) drilling holes increases surface area somewhat, thus improving heat-transfer properties; and (2) gives a bit of benefit in weight-reduction without affecting braking power. (Indeed, Constellation's input makes me think it improves braking.

Chrome-plated braking surfaces!!?? Were they waxed (or lacquered) as well??  ;D  ;D

Reminds me of something I saw, back when. In April 1970 when the the US Marine Third Amphibious Force (IIIMAF) relinquished operations in the northern part of RVN to the Army's XXIV Corps, the mentally-challenged US Army colonel who became the Headquarters Commandant of the former III MAF compound (Camp Horn, Da Nang, an old French Foreign Legion compound, BTW) decided to beautify the compound — so he ordered that the interior-defense bunkers be painted white!!! Anyone have an idea what a firing slit in a white bunker looks like at night? You got it — a bull's eye on a target (even with little or no moonlight)

This was the same guy who put white one-foot-high picket fences along the walkways in the compound. That was all we needed: punji stakes to injure people running in darkness for the bunkers during a night rocket attack!

I was in the Army at the time, working at IIIMAF in a US Air Force facility. Made me appreciate the Marines!

Guilty as charged! I admit to shopping only superficially, usually walking into Bob's or Morton's (both BMW dealers) and browsing the wall racks in the Parts & Accessories section.  :-[
