Mike what kind of cleaner did you use on that Bell Housing?  I cleaned mine up but not quite that clean.

Mike,
A couple cans of Brake Cleaner and some 1" grout brushes and green scotchbrite pads cleaned everything up well and very quickly.

Damn this is getting frustrating!

Now I have found another part that needs replacing that is not shown on any parts diagram I can find.

If you look at the crank/flywheel (Item 3 on this diagram) http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=0353&mospid=47850&btnr=11_1716&hg=11&fg=25  inside the sleeve of my flywheel (the part that fits over the end of the crank) there is an O ring about 1/2" in from the end.  The O ring fits in a groove machined on the inside of the flywheel sleeve.  The O ring measues about 63 mm in diameter and 3.2 mm thick according to my caliper.  Now I have to go to the BMW dealer again and see if I can get them to find this part.

This bike was built in 03/79 for the German market and this is not the first time I have found differences from the parts diagrams.  I'm thinking that maybe the early German market R65's were built to different specs from other R65's.  I think I did read somewhere that they have a higher horse power rating...this may have something to do with the differences.

If anyone can give me a part number for this it would really be helpful.  I'm off to Edmonton on Tuesday so I'll stop in at the BMW dealer there and see if he can be more helpful than the dealer in Victoria was.

I guess the other option is to find someone that sells O rings.  The only thing I'm thinking is that this may be a special spec O ring.  It is kind of beige in colour.  Any thoughts anyone?

Bob, I saw that O Ring but I'm not sure that it is the correct part.

When I compare that parts diagram to my set up, item number 12 does not exist on my bike.  It appears to be incorporated and machined as a part of the flywheel on my bike.  It is possible that the  O ring shown in the diagram is the same size but unless somone else with the same set up can chime in and let us know I'm guessing my only option will be to order this part and hope that it is the correct size or see if I can buy  the same size O ring at some outlet.  Then again I would surmize that the outside diameter of the part that the flywheel fits on should be the same on my bike as the one shown in the diagram so at least the diameter of the O ring should be the same.

Buy the o-ring.  Your bike uses it.

In fact, both the heavy flywheels and the clutch carriers used them.  Another common part across most of the line, I believe.

And that 0-ring is larger (in thickness) than the one for the pump cover:

It had me confused for a while!
