Oil Pump O Ring Part Number

Does anyone have the part number for the O ring on the oil pump cover on a '79 R65.  My guess is that it is probably different from the '81 on up.  

There is no part number in the fiche I looked at and the dealer did not have the number.  He does have a ring that he believes is correct.  I'd just like to verify it before I travel 100 mi for the wrong part.

I did a parts search for a '79 R80, came up with the part number : 11411335895 .

These parts were pretty common across all displacement bikes made in the same time frame .

Hope it matches what your parts supplier has .

If you have problems finding a part, like this one, where it is illustrated, but no part number is listed for it, go to a larger displacement bike made the same time your bike was, a good bet it will be listed for the larger bike .

Just one of those oddities with the BMW parts catalog .

This is an interesting one.  Mike, you may try a few other fiche sites like A&S or Bob's and see what you get. I didn't see one on OEM. I get a o-ring part number from the A&S site of 11 41 1 335 896.  Better call before making the trip to be sure.

11 41 1 335 895 is the o-ring part number for my 81 R65.

Let us know what's up if you get to the bottom of this.

Thanks Mike.  That's interesting that the ASCycle web site has the O Ring part number and the OEM does not.  It's also interesting that the numbers are different between yours and mine.  I'll call the dealer today to see the part number of the ring he is holding for me.

I wonder if the reason that I have a leak here is that the wrong O Ring is in there now???

I talked to the co-worker that ran his own BMW repair shop out of his garage .

He vaguely remembers something about BMW changing the part number for that o-ring, and it wasn't changed in the BMW parts catalog .

He going to check to see if he has any paperwork on it .

I ordered one of these o-rings from Chicago BMW about 3 years ago, but this is one of the receipts that I can't find .

I'll look again when I get home from work this afternoon .

11 41 1 335 895 is the part # I used for my new, '81 engine.  

I bought it from Matt @ Boxerworks when he was still doing new parts (no longer).

Well this has been an interesting and frustrating exercise.  I spoke with the parts guy at the BMW shop and he "thought" that the "895' part number was correct...he didn't know why other than he had one in stock.   So I asked him how he could verify it.  He told me that he could telex BMW but would not do that for a $3 part.  I explained to him the consequences of installing the wrong part but this didn't change his mind.  He said when you own an old bike you have to "make do".  Needless to say I was quite upset with this guy but I kept my cool.  I know the owner of this shop and several of his guys and have never experienced anything like this.  All the other people go out of their way to be helpful.  I plan on having a conversation with the owner next time I see him.

Anyway I picked up the part he has and it compares with the part that's currently in there.  Tonight I took a look at the part numbers of the plate and for an 81 R65 the plate has a different part number (the 895 part apparently fits the 81).  So I took Bob's advice and found a 1980 R100.  The plate has the same part number as my '79 and it shows the O ring as the 895 part number.   So now I'm more confident that it will work

I'll install it tomorrow and put the clutch etc back in.

The cover may have changed over the years, to accommodate changes in fasteners, but I think it would be a safe assumption the o-ring has not changed, and it is most likely common all across  the 247/248 line of engines.

"make do" ? I would find another parts source after talking with the owner and explaining why he's lost a customer.

The only difference in oil pump covers that I know of, is that one style has countersunk screws with a straight screwdriver slot, and the other has a hex head bolt .

My BMW shop manual shows the countersunk screws, it covers the '79-'80 model year bikes .

That's interesting Bob.  My plate has countersunk holes but the studs are just hex head bolts (no countersink).  The countersink in the plate has a flat surface on which the bolts seat.  The other interesting thing is that there are were no lock washers on the bolts when I took them out and none are shown in the parts diagram.  I'm thinking that some locktight blue might be appropriate here.  What do you think?

A little bit of blue Loctite, would be a safe thing to do .

Don't want to go back and do all this work over again, just because of a loose fastener .

Yes, make sure all the threads are clean and dry. You can also coat the gasket with a very faint film of clean engine oil be sure not to overtorque the screws. I believe it's 7.0 to 7.5 Ft-lb. Here's some pictures of my replacement.
