I'm really liking these without the pin stripes:

Yeah, I'm not a big pinstripe fan myself, and if I ever paint my bike it'll definitely be in a high-gloss black.

There are some very cool looking bikes here.....going to be hard to choose..........that new color.
I think the use of pinstripes sort of depends on the look your going for. If you want a more modern look then go for no stripe or the thin stripe. I started to get a old slash 2 bike but decided I needed electric start, a little more horse power and disk brakes of a more modern bike. However, being old I like that old look so used the old slash 2 double pin strip on my R65. I also carried that pinstripe over to the seat and sidecar seat.  If you go with pin stripes you might consider carrying it over to the seat as well. You can get your seat recovered without spending a small fortune. Mine was done for $350.00 but that included the sidecar seat as well. I thought that red bike with the big white pinstripe was really cool. Here is a closer look at the pinstripe on bike and seats.

I really like the Yellow and Black.

Here is the LS that was on e-bay recently (that I missed bidding on).

Do you know anything about the wheels? I really like them.
Thanks

Look at this neat site:

http://www.jgstechnical.com/html/randd/colorize/index.html

You may have to go to products and find their flash demo for colorization demo. Can click on colours choices and add them to frame, exhaust, etc. etc. of the bike.

Neat

It's the Flash Colorization demo 1 that uses a motorcycle. If you have troubles finding this just play with the site using only the jgstechnical.com part in the URL. Fun.....

I can't find a picture, but I love the slate/gun metal grey colour on some beemers.

Toss up between that and black.

Maybe I'm biased becasue my first car was a gun metal gray/blue.

A scheme using that, black, silver and teh right amount of chrome looks awesome....

This colour would be high on my list...

Black is cool, very traditional...

Hi Justin
I just registered on "The Unofficial and Purposely Disorganized R65 Forum" and sent off the obligatory first post.
Have been going through the various topics and came across this fantastic pictureof you r80. From reading the posts you appear to be quite an authority on the R65, so I thought I would ask you whether I could fit an R80 tank on to the R65. Are they standard fitting's ? I just love that scalloped look of the r/80 tank

Ivan,

Thanks for the "flowers" but I am far from an authority, especially when it come to interchanging things between the R80 and R65.  Probably a better person to ask would be Rev. Eddie who has quite a BMW used parts business and seems to be pretty much in tune with what will work on what.  I think I do remember reading somewhere that the dual spigot R80ST(?) tank will fit except the gap between seat and tank will be greater.  Some of the R80 (either ST or GS) tanks were slightly scalloped and some like them much better, especially if you can find the 2 spigot model.

I think maybe the bike you are referring to is my black '81 R100 (former RT in a previous life) and I have also wondered about adapting one of these to an R65.  The rear mounting arrangement would have to be changed as the two tanks mount/attach totally different at the rear of the tank.  I have been looking for a killer deal on a "spare" R100 tank and if I ever find one I'll do some trial fitting and "head scratching" to see if it would be feasible.  You will notice that my R100 is an '81 dual shock and the rear cowl and seat are from a later "monoshock" bike so you can make pretty much anything fit anything, if you're determined enough... ;)

Welcome aboard and show us some pics of what you are cooking up!

Hi Justin

Thanks for that. I am yet to source a BMW tech here on the gold coast. The Official dealers refuse to touch such an old model they say and will be getting back to me with some info on a BMW tech. So lets see. If I have to make modifications, I will. Maybe then have to source a seat that would fit the gap. Anyway, I am looking forward to bringing the bike up to scratch. Its come with Stainless pipes, but the balancer tube is kind of grotty. Anyway, shall take a series of pics to show the bike Pre-resotoration and then post-restoration. Its gonna be awhile, but I hope to get there.

They have a few
"crash bikes" auctions here regularly and I plan to start attending them. You never know.

'tisall for now
