Fuel filter/strainer - R65 1981.
« on: March 05, 2010, 10:47:56 AM »
I have got a new fuel filter/strainer which I tried to replace.
This filter is in the fuel tap. The old filter looked as it was to long and so did the new one too. And it did not fit into the grooves in the hose connector. How should it fit? Do I have to shorten it, which I did?
Thanks

If it is the filter like I have on my '81 R65, it threads into the topside, the side that goes into the fuel tap, of the barbed part that the fuel hose pushes onto .

Yes, that is what I have too.
I think my new filter is not a BMW original. Maybe it does not fit as good as it should. I did have a filter in the fuel line, but I removed it.
Thanks

Those little filters are less effective, and more easily blocked, than the external in-line ones and if you've got rust in your tank they are next to useless. My recommendation is to discard them, fit external in-line filters and use these in-tank ones from Motorworks to fit over the fuel tap inlets:

I have a paper element fuel filter installed in the fuel line, it makes a difference over the filter in the fuel tap .

FF2314 from Autozone.  Paper element seems to work fine and not too large.  Works with 1/4" hoses.
