At least on my bike, I can start the bike in neutral with the bike on the sidestand, and if I forget to 'stow' the sidestand after I get on, when I put the transmission into gear, the engine quits .

If you do disable the neutral light circuit, I would get familiar with the connector for the clutch lever interlock switch .

If it goes bad (I'm on my second replacement switch), you will no longer have a starter .

Keep a small piece of wire in your tool kit, just in case .

Good advice from a guy with the T-shirt. WILCO.

Dadgummit Monte, I was going to post this question like you asked me to, but I see you beat me to it.  Guess I was sorta correct without really knowing why.  That's why I love this forum so much!

A corollary to the Neutral switch saga was that last summer I found that my neutral light had stopped functioning.  Before going into the tachometer to replace the bulb, I looked for something stupid and - WALA - I discovered the ground wire down by the gearshift lever on the left hand side of the motor was broken.  It is part of the wiring harness that goes to the neutral switch.  I fixed the ground and the light started working again!   :o

Greetings from windy and 43'F Atlanta - tough on airplanes but no trouble at all for BMW R65's.

My Kawasaki KLE500, a dual purpose bike, will only start in neutral ... with the clutch out (the lever out, which really means clutch is in!!).

This is a real pita when it stalls over a technical section or going through a stream etc ..... I wish I could just whip the clutch in and hit the start button.

Dear Lord, Steve! Electric starters on off-road race bikes. What'll they think of next...

I missed out on electric starters on off-road bikes, including racers. I spent a number of years racing off-road in moto-x, x-country, enduro and even a couple trials events. I sure could have used "the button" back in the day.

Finally had to add a custom reed valve to my favorite Penton -No, not KTM back then- to ease the pain of restarting after a "sudden stop" whilst in a rush.[smiley=furious3.gif]
