Voltmeter and clock pod mounting brackets attachme
« on: December 06, 2009, 11:04:00 AM »
[size=12]The parts microfiche for the R65 shows two mounting brackets (62-21-1-238-003 & 62-21-1-238-004) for the additional instrument pods, each of which attaches with a 07-11-9-901-170 hex bolt (M8X30-ZNS), but doesn't show what they are supposed to bolt into. Does anyone know?

Looking at the microfiche http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=0364&mospid=47851&btnr=62_0218&hg=62&fg=15 , the M8x30 bolts are longer than the M8x20 that hold the headlight to the front plate.
I suspect the brackets mount to the headlight ears.  You can see the mounts have tabs to prevent them from rotating.

But this is ONLY a guess.  I've never held the parts in my hands.

[size=14]Rob,

Thanks. You may be right, but, from the picture on the microfiche, it would appear that the tabs are lower than the hole for the bolt, which , if the tabs are to sit atop the headlight “ears”, would cause the barackets to be tilted upward quite a bit, making the faces of the instrument pods tilt forward - away from the rider’s vision.

My 79 R65 has these pods. The bracket for each one fits on the end of the 10 x 45 hex head bolt (part 07119901169) which clamps the top fork cross brace.( Details from the RealOEM diagram.)

Can you offer a picture?

You must mean the bolts that fasten the breast plate to the top triple clamp?

Surely not the clamp bolts on the back-side of the triple clamp...

Hi Rob, I only have a little digital camera (Canon Ixus 750) but here goes. In the top left of the picture what you see is the underside of the clock pod, the one on the right-hand side of the bike. The fitting has nothing to do with the headlight ears. Hope this is some use!

PS the top right part, looks like a sharp edged piece of pie, is the underside of the tacho. It isn't really sharp edged, it's just the light of the flash shining off it!

Excellent picture, Constellation.  Thank you.

If you don't have a gallery on the forum yet, you should create one and stick that picture in it!

[size=14]So, does the tab that sticks out perpendicular to the bracket go under the lip that protrudes forward at he top of the headlight/turn signal/instrument panel? If not, where does it go?

From what I can see, the welded-on perpendicular tab extends rearward, contacting the edge of the breastplate, preventing it from rotating.

In the photo from above, you can see a circular dimple.  That is the tack weld for the tab.

#10 is the left, and #11 is for the right.

This picture is looking from the front toward the rear.

I've been away, have not seen the site for a while.
Gosh! What a lot of trouble this little pod bracket seems to be causing! Here' a photo of the back side, maybe this will help. The bright little round object top left, above the fork leg, is the brake fluid  drain plug at the handlebar lever.
Good luck!

Another look at the photo leads me to ask: what's the welded-on tab for anyway? It doesn't seem to have any particular purpose. Or does it?

I would venture to say, your right and left are swapped.

I think the tab is to prevent the bracket from rotating if the bolt loosened, in which case, it needs to be below the bracket, not above.

This change would also alter the height of the instruments to a slight degree, I think.

I expect you are right Rob, though I find it difficult to visualise how it would look upside down and other way round! and surely don't intend to take it apart to try! However the pod/clock/bracket assembly is not heavy and is fixed under a pretty big hex head, so I doubt it would ever move, tab or no tab. The pods on my R65 seem to have been there a long while. Incidentally while the clock is very good the BMW voltmeter well fulfills its reputation for being inaccurate!

I know this is not applicable to all BMW voltmeters, but I got one off of eBay, and checked it's accuracy with a DC power supply .

I had a digital voltmeter, connected to the terminals on the BMW voltmeter, I set the power supply output to the corresponding graduations on the BMW voltmeter, and the BMW indicator, showed within a needles width the correct voltage .

I selected various points on the bikes electrical system, to sample the voltage, and this is where I believe the voltmeter inaccuracies are coming from .

Where you wire in the voltmeter, is a big determining factor, on it's accuracy of indication .

The closer to the battery, the more accurate the indication .

Thanks for the pictures, up to now, I could not figure out how the meters were mounted, just by looking at the 'exploded' diagrams in the parts catalogs .
