Thanks Bob

I have the earlier diagram and can now see the the circular mutipole connector it just isn't labelled as the tacho.  Connection numbers are the same.

I agree the steering bearings should not be needed as a ground path and therefore still don't understand Moto-bins comment. I wonder if anyone has actually had this problem.

My tach needle zings all over creation beyond 4000 rpm.  Ill see if the ground wire mentioned here helps at all.

Well as time goes on my tacho seems to be having more and more time off.

It is also developing a hyperactive disorder above 3-4000 rpm mark.

I have run an additional grounding wire to the instrument binnacle but it has made no difference to the tacho's operation.

This makes me think it is the instrument rather than the wiring.
Has anyone had any luck repairing an R65 tacho?
Anything specific to look out for?

cheers

My tacho has always worked fine but my speedo had almost exactly the same symptoms as your tacho.
I had it rebuilt many years ago and it eventually started get dodgy again, I was about to send it away to get fixed again but when I took it off, I gave it a shake, put some grease on the nylon gears, gave it a run on the electric drill and put it back on, it's been as good as new ever since. Beats me ...

The electrical 'signal' for the tachometer, comes from a wire that comes off of the ignition coil .

If your wire, and connections are good, it's a good chance there is a problem with the printed circuit board inside the tachometer .

There have been problems with the solder connections, and the pc board itself cracking causing a 'nervous' needle .
