1100 into R65
« on: July 24, 2009, 01:19:24 AM »
I've got a wicked idea ......

During my travels yesterday I came across a 1100 that had been in quite a severe front end accident with lots of frame, telelever damage but the motor is okay apart from squashed r/h exhaust and bad suffing of the left pot.

It was crashed about 3 years ago and the owner was going to fix it but the cost (and scarcity) of replacement used frames made it not worthwhile.

Engine does not start as there is no life in the battery and obviously no fuel, but he assures me it was running fine after the accident.

Will this fit, without too much work, into an R65 using the R65 gearbox or driveshaft etc?

I don't think so, the engine as well as the drivetrain are quite different.  How are your fabrication skills?

I like the idea of the project.

How much work is too much though?

The oilhead bikes use the engine as a stressed part of the bike, the front and rear suspension bolt to the engine, rather than the engine sitting in a tube frame .

What Bob said, plus the oilheads are paralever bikes so just mating up a drive train would be a monumental challenge.  But then again, nothing is mechanically impossible if you throw enough money at it.  You could probably part out the engine on ebay or to a place like Beemerboneyard and keep your R65 running for quite a while with the proceeds.

I realise the drive train is totally different ...I was thinking more of dropping in the engine and mating it to the existing R65 'box.

You would need to get an adapter to go between the engine and transmission, because the transmissions are a completely different shape, where they mate to the engine .

The transmission from the R1100 would have to go with the engine - the oilhead casing&block mounting points are totally different from the airhead's for hanging a transmission on it - as others noted the engine is a stressed part of the frame and doesn't just "live" inside a frame.

IF you think that doing transmission input spline lubes on our little airheads requires alot of disassembly - you should see what is left when performing the same service on an oilhead (hint: a whole lot more stuff is taken apart)..

Again, anything is possible with enough skill and money - but that is one project that would take a lot more of both than what I'd be willing to provide, personally speaking.

Hey Steve, is the final drive on the unit in good condition and is it for sale?  I'm thinking with two R1100's to maintain I'm going to need a replacement eventually.

Yes, and have you priced new ones lately? :-X  The seals in the final drive will eventually give out and replacing them costs as much or more than buying a new final drive.  That's why used final drives for the 1100's are so hard to find.

The BMWMOA News had a piece an issue or two back about an Oilhead/slash2 conversion. If you can put one into a /2 anything is possible.
