Head Bearing Puller

The '83 R65 needs new head bearings. "Notchy" feel in the steering plus the scoot wanders a bit at cruise.

Motobins supplied new bearings at one-third the asking price of my local vendor even factoring in the Royal Air Mail delivery. Fork slider bump stops, seals and felts will get the front end tuned up.

I ordered a Head Bearing Puller from Cycle Works LLC. The Kansas-based company is now owned by Dan; he carries on the Ed Korn tradition of affordable BMW-specific airhead tools.

Four day delivery was a pleasant surprise. The tool's craftsmanship looks great and it will likely last forever.

Thanks for the tip on the Motobins bearings, Monte.  I am getting ready to buy a set.

A question about the steering head puller.  Did you buy both tools for the inner and outer races?
I was under the impression that it was only the outer race that is the tough nut, and a standard bearing puller could get the rest....

Just bought the outer race puller for $39.00. There's a tech article on AirHeads Beemer Club that simplifies the explanation of removing the inner race/s.   Monte

I was thinking of buying that very same tool last year, but as I wasn't in immediate need, I put it off.   They are good folks to deal with.

Will the swingarm tool also work on the upper head bearings?

I have a couple of tools from Ed Korn.  Nice guy.  Glad to see there is continuity with the new gent running the place.  8-)

The new gent guy is Dan, an engineer by trade. Ed Korn is a consultant to his former firm so I'd expect the quality and value to remain consistent.

Sent a thank you to Dan for the quick service and he responded that he tries to show his appreciation to his customers by getting the goods out pronto. What a refreshing idea!

Motobins came out to be $42 US.
I think I can do that well locally.

Do you guys in the US have to pay duty on imported parts from England?  If so what is the percentage?

It is my understanding that there is no duty as long as the value is below a certain amount.  There was no import duty/tax on the seatcover I ordered from motobins last year, though the value was just under $50.
What the limit is, I don't know..
