R65 rear axle differences.
« on: March 19, 2007, 10:00:33 PM »
I ran across something interesting while I was doing some research on R65 axles.  It looks like there are three different rear axles depending on model and year.  ::) The pre-'81 bikes have one part number, the '81 - ''84 have another part number (which pulls up on-line as  "REAR AXLE /5 TO /7"), and the LS has yet another part number!  And, surprisingly, the R65LS axle is almost $20 cheaper than the one for the standard R65!!!  [smiley=shocked2.gif]

Anybody have any idea as to what the differences are?

Well no, not really, but I'd be happy to yank my '82 R65LS axel and send along the dimensions as a start. I'm not CAD equipped so would a scan of a dimensional drawing werk?
By the way, I'm still oogling your stainless creation. Can that Hex head cap bolt hold about 35 ft/lbs?

I went to RealOEM.com, and the only difference that I could see between the standard R65 and LS version axle, was on the LS axle there is a step cut into the axle at the thread end, that the standard doesn't have. I couldn't see any difference in the '79-80 axle. But it wouldn't be the first time the parts catalog had it wrong. I went to A&S BMW, and Max BMW parts site, and both of them show the same picture for both the standard and LS, so much for that observation!

I have no real knowledge on the subject, but since so many other things about the LS rear wheel are different, why not the axle, as well?

Which brings up the question: if one were to put LS wheels on a non-LS R65 for the tubeless advantage, would they have to change out final drives, as well, seeing how the brake shoes are a different diameter?

Boy howdy. I had no idea the axles we have are NOT stainless... dang!

Couple years ago I thought I needed an extra long motor mount stud on the RT for attaching the Brown sidestand, and wandered down to Tacoma Screw. Wow! That place is like Fastener Heaven, man! They cut me some nice threaded steel pieces to try out, but they didn't have any stainless that day in that size...

But anyhow, Justin's new axle bolt is WAY cool! That's like R65 art, man.  ;D

Rob, I checked RealOEM, and got the same part number for a final drive assembly for my '81 and for an '82 LS. So I think you shouldn't have a problem there.

Also, it's my understanding the the LS wheels are still tube-type rims.  :(

Joan, I'll send you a dimensioned drawing so you can pass it along to your tat artist...
