'86 r65 rear brake / wheel installation difficulty

since i was changing the rear tire, i thought i'd freshen up the brakes as well.

took the old ones off, put the new shoes on - and the wheel won't fit.  do these look like the right parts, or do i have an assembly issue?

as you can see from the pictures, the new parts both ride on the outside edge of the cam, while the old parts were inside/outside.  the assembly diameter is pretty damn close to what i measure on the drum, although i don't have 8" calipers and i used a tape.

i took the nut all the way off the brake rod and moved the lever to the position that provides the smallest diameter.

i can hang the wheel on the top shoe, but it simply won't go over the bottom.  it occasionally feels as if the wheel is hanging at the back.

Take them back! It looks like they have given you 2 bottom shoes and even if you got the wheel to fit, the cam wouldn't work properly.
If for some reason they can't supply the proper part you could get your old shoes relined, although they always seem to put too much material on them and have to be ground down to fit.

Bruce is right. I just had my shoes of for a clean up and they are different top to bottom to fit the cam.

Look at your 3rd picture.

How do the new parts look as compared to the old parts ?

Have you tried swapping the shoes from how you had them in the first picture ?

It looks like if you installed the shoes like you have them in the last picture, they should work .

the parts in the third picture are the old (bmw) shoes.  the first two pictures are the new shoes.  the new shoes will not assemble in a fashion like the old ones.

Looks like you got a double half-order of brake shoes and no fries. :-/

In the interest of sparing other R65ers a similar snag, might you be willing to share the vendor's i.d.? We all trade tips on niche market suppliers as well as the major players so it would be good to know where not to browse for brake parts. Your call, of course. Just wondering...

Just as important, how does the supplier solve the problem?  Mail order mistakes can be such a P.I.T.A. because I want my stuff now so I can fix what's wrong.  Let us know how that turns out, if they fix it right away or give you push back.

we'll see how it goes.  i called them this morning and sent them the above pictures.  the tech said i could swap them out for oe parts, but that the price was a bit more. no problem if it fits.  the part number appears to be correct, but the manufacturer may have pack the shoes incorrectly.

i'm going to call them again tomorrow when i don't leave all the relevant information on the garage floor.

i'm not going to bag on the dealer until we get this resolved one way or another.  they've been good in the past and i expect the same again.

like so many previous successful endeavors, this project ended reeking of sweat and bug spray, and with a new addition to the mystery bolt collection.

i cleaned up the old brakes, reinstalled them, and hey, that wheel goes right on.

you can see how the new shoe extends considerably past the old shoe
when held to the pin and cam.


the test ride didn't result in flames, so i'm calling it a win.  we'll see what happens with the exchange.

bmw motorcycles of grand rapids (http://www.bmwmcgr.com/) will be shipping me a new set of shoes, along with a spiffy new (unsolicited) tee-shirt since they felt bad about mix up and me having to pay shipping back to them.

had i seen the diagram on the side of the box i would have figured things out sooner.  clearly the manufacturer packed two lower shoes.

they've always been good about parts and service in the past, and they've been great in this instance.
