A Question of Color
« on: July 12, 2009, 06:38:42 PM »
I hate to bring up a sensitive issue, but I'm trying to break away from Blue, with my recently acquired R65 (runs great, low mileage, but apparently repainted with a spray-can, or even a toothbrush) yet stay with an an authentic R65 color...
So my question is: Has anyone seen (or have samples of) any of the GREENS that BMW used on the various R65's (Minz green, metallic minz, bright minz, "black green", etc.?  Any idea what color the attached R90/6 photo represents?  How about the R65 color simply called "gray"?
All kindly guidance appreciated (as long as you don't suggest black, blue, or any combination of the two)!

I am not aware that any R65 bikes came from the factory in green paint - except perhaps for european polizei bikes which are green & white in Germany.

Of the standard R65 factory colors I have in my literature, you've got some choices (factory paint code in parenthesis:
1979-1980:
Silber (548) silver
Orangemetallic (551)
Bronco-anthrazitmetallic (589)   the famous "bronco brown color"

1981:
Schwarz (519) black
Canyonrot (518)  a brick red color
AzureBlauMetallic (501)    - Blue that you probably don't want
yucaturkismetallic (503)  - this is sort of a deep blue-green color

1982:
All of the above, plus (2) colors added with introduction of the R65LS models:
Hennarot (562)   a bright red with orange color
Polarismetallic (563) a bright silver

BMW did make some nice green painted models beginning with the /6 bikes, and some of the RT models were available in green/smoke as well.   A paint shop that carries the Glasurit paint (it is expensive) could show you the color codes and paint samples.

Burt, I guess I must question your stipulation that it be an "Authentic r65 color" when you are adamant about changing to a non-stock (for your bike) color?  You've expressed a desire for a green, which was not available on this model.  Unless you are going back 100% stock and intend to enter in judged shows, etc., paint it whatever color grabs you!

Go to the neighborhood paint store (DuPont, PPG, Martin Senour, etc.), look through the chip-books, and pick a color that has the "wow-factor" you are looking for...

Justin
First, let me issue all the disclaimers that I have the greatest admiration for the beautiful shades of blue that wives (including my own) love so much...   ;)  I've abandoned greens (the BM colours list, with which I've already spent a lot of time, listed 'black green' among the R65 colors).  Even though it's not a restoration, however, I think I will still go with an R65 color-- considering the fact that dealers probably switched the body work on some of them anyway.  I'm leaning towards the white (Alpine White, I think) listed as an R65 color.
Always good to get input from a knowledgeable owner/rider-- especially one that's 'right here in the hood.'
THANKS!

If you like White, then go for it!    8-)

I've never been a proponent of "correctness" and have always picked colors that I like - mainly because I'm the one who has to live/look at it for a long time!  I have restored one vehicle - ever - back to 100% original, including color, that being a 1965 Impala SS 396.  Looking back on it I still don't know if it was worth all of the grief!!

The BMW color Atlanta Blue, a light metallic color is an eye catcher on a motorcycle, my '02 R1150R is Atlanta Blue, and I get compliments and comments on it since I've owned it .

It was a common color of the BMW Z-3 4 wheeler as well .
'81 R65
'82 R65 LS
'84 R65 LS
'87 Moto Guzzi V65 Lario
'02 R1150R
Riding all year long since 1993 .
I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

LuckyLou-- I would have thought that was 'Silver Beige'-- but it's Champagne? It really is gorgeous.  I
'm also trying to find a photo of Atlanta Blue to check out.  There IS one other factor that will govern my color choice-- a bright red item I purchased from Bengt Phorqs...

It is silver beige with olive pinstripe but i believe it was marketed in the states as "champagne" stll not sure what colour the decals should be though.
