Turn Signal Switch disintegrated
« on: June 06, 2009, 02:44:11 PM »
Help, my turn signal switch failed on me. So I look on realoem.com to find out the part number (61311244420), and proceed to look up how much the new Left hand switch assembly is gonna set me back.

WOW for a measly Ben franklin I can buy a new one  :'(

I've checked eBay already, so I was wondering if any of you guys know where I could look for a more reasonable prices turn signal switch? Also is there a way to actually just get the actual turn signal switch part instead of the entire assembly???

Thanks

Peter

There are no individual parts available for the switch, my only concern with an eBay or used part, is that you may pay for a part that is in a similar condition as your broken part, or might fail within a short time in use .

I personally am on my second replacement switch assembly, the main culprit is the fact that the plastic parts get brittle with age, then fall apart .

I was lucky on my R100.  The little slide block that carries the contacts on the inside broke in half and I was able to glue it back together.  That was 5 years ago and still going strong.  I used a two part plastic cement of some sort but can't remember brand/name, etc...

For less than a C note Moto Bins has one complete with an on/off headlight switch.

I noticed an R80 switch on the Aussie Ebay. It was used and damaged but you might be able to get the part you need from it.

The Motobins description of the item states that it is not standard in the USA market .

I don't think the connectors are the same .

On an R100 the "Euro switch" does require some slight wiring work and probably would be the same for an R65.  I think there's like one extra wire that needs to be attached somewhere but it shouldn't be very hard to figure out with a wiring diagram.

Bob,
You are correct. It wouldn't be a plug and play installation. There is another listed for less that is R45/65 specific. I do enjoy electrical projects tho and would love to have the Euro switch, been eyeing it for some time now.

Got a new one from Chicago BMW for about $75. They offer a 20% discount off list.........but if not in stock it can take a while to receive.

I have a '79 R65 and my turn indicator assembly, specifically the indicator switch, is also iffy.   However, I have the added symptom that every time I use the turn indicator I hear a loud beeping that sounds like an a horn.   I can beep the actual horn, which is much louder, while I hear this mystery buzzer/horn beeping in time to the turn indicators.   I have grabbed the actual horn while I hear the mystery buzz/horn and it is not making any sound.   I was thinking I had a short to the horn but I am not sure now.   Any ideas?   Is there a fork lock warning buzzer?   I can't find anything in the handbook or the shop manuel.   I am a newb so this is probably a stupid question. :P

Ain't no stupid questions... only dumb answers. ;D

You most likely have an aftermarket "Turn Signal Buzzer Alert Thingy". Of course, I personally never forget to turn off the blinkers. :-[ Look for the odd wire out of place and track down the system.

On 1979 and 1980 models they came from the factory with an "annunciator" which will sound if the turn signal is on and the bike isn't in neutral or the clutch pulled in.  There may have been "aftermarket" ones for the later years.  I would have liked it if it wasn't so loud.

Awesome...Thats what it is.   It's just so frikkin loud I thought it was a horn.   It was not working the first time I road the bike. I took the switch assembly apart and cleaned it and whamo the thing started screamig at me when I used the blinker so I thought I uncovered a short lol.   I took it off but put it in a safe place so I can put it back on if I ever sell it the bike.   I rode it again last night around my neighborhood and did like 50 laps around the block after reading y'alls answer.   Thanks very much for the help.   I feel much better. :D

...But now your neighbors think you're kinda strange. :D Fifty laps? How many laps before they quit waving at you?  ;D
