Side Stand Options?

My ’85 SWB R65 has the common too much auto-flip side stand issue I read others have.  The Brown side stand seems to be a preferred solution, but I have not tracked down a supplier.  Plenty of folks seem to stock Brown side stands to fit airheads other than the R65.  Any suggestion of a vendor that might have a R65 version (I’m in the U.S. but make regular trips to the U.K and will be in Germany and France sometime this year)?  What’s the difference between the “all other airheads” Brown side stand and a R65 version, and can the former be modified successfully to fit a R65?  Any thoughts on products from other manufacturers?  Thanks.  Mark

Is your '85 a Monoshock? Should be, and if so the same stand that'll fit the same-framed R80 and R100 will also work for you.
If not, and you've somehow got an '85 twin shocker (it's happened), try to contact member "beemerrich", who now seems to have vanished from the member listings here. Several of us got our R65 Browns thru him,and they fit well and bolted right up. The difference is about 1.5" less overall length. Some hardcore folks have cut this out of the stand from a larger Airhead and welded everything back up

Maybe Justin can link you up with him if his info is still on file? If not, you're back to watching Ebay, where they do pop up for sale semi-often.
Or, if in Europe, you can go with the adjustable "Surefoot stand", which is basically unobtainable here in the States. Something about customs, exchange rates, all that gub'ment nonsense, etc.

Try Bob's BMW. The catalog advertised Brown side stands for R65 a little more than a year ago. Good Luck!

I love my Brown side stand.   I don't feel like my bike is going to fall over any more.  I got mine through Boxerworks.

Give them a call or send them an e-mail and they'll know exactly which one you need.  He's a good guy.  I've done business with him and will do so again.

I bought the Brown for Barbi's R65 from Boxerworks when they were having a special.  I bought the one for my R100 monoshock from beemerrich_49503@hotmail.com.  Not sure if this addy is still good or not...

Max BMW has the Brown sidestand but hold your breath when you see the price.  It's around $125.  Tried to buy one for my R100GS but found out it was for the R65.

Oh, and one other comment.  My '75 R90/6 had the flip up side stand.  I found this fix on Duane Ausherman's site.  http://w6rec.com/duane/bmw/sidestand.htm

Don't know it will work for your '85 but it worked for my '75.  It's a really simple fix and takes less than one minute.

Thanks all.  Just to confirm, my R65 is a late dual-shock model.

Nothing on eBay at present, but I’ll keep looking.

At least one of the vendors suggested (Ted Porter’s BeemerShop) has a R65 Brown side stand listed in their on-line catalog for $149 before shipping.

A quick web search shows MOTORWORKS in the U.K. listing a R65 Surefoot side stand for £63.25 including VAT.  Taking off the 15% VAT and doing the exchange rate thing puts this around $80 before shipping.  I’ve sent them a fax and will see where this goes (they are a mile or two away from my sister’s place in the U.K. so a range of payment/shipping options open up.)

I’ll report back in due course.

I just got a Surefoot for mine, direct from England.  I ordered it from Motobins, I believe for around 115 dollars with shipping.  It's nice, and an easy installation.  Removing the old stand was much more trouble, as I had to remove the exhaust to get to the pivot bolt.  

It took some getting used to as it is located farther back, right under the left foot peg.  I still have to look down to use it as I'm not used to it yet.

I keep forgetting to get a picture to post.    The R65 stand does not require that you send in your foot peg.  It just bolts to the rear motor mount, with an extension running forward for a brace.  I'll try to put up a picture.  My first thought was to try a write up for the installation but it's too simple to bother with.
