BOYER BRANSDEN replace Bean Can?
« on: May 20, 2009, 03:48:57 AM »
Does the BOYER BRANSDEN MICRO DIGITAL ELECTRONIC IGNITION kit as advertised on Motorbins replace the bean can on an '81 R65. Has anyone tried it?

At 125 pound it is cheaper than a bean can!

It certainly replaces its function.  However does not most of it go inside the bean can.

I ahve never fitted one though . . .still got me old points.

If it is the ignition I am thinking of, it mounts on the alternator stator and triggers off the crank via the alternator rotor.

I can see pluses and minuses in this, one plus is a worm timing chain wouldn't affect timing.

A big minus is needing to re-time anytime you had to work on the alternator.

I'm using an Omega and it works fine. As to the retiming after having worked on the alternator, I do it by markings on the Omega and the little magnetic trigger.

I can only recommend changing the whole electric system to modern units. I have a modern ignition coil, a combined rectifier and voltage regulator and the Omega. Apart from less wiring, the units are much smaller and works better than the old ones. The rectifier/regulator exploits the power from the old alternator far better than the old giving a charging voltage of 13.6 volts where the old never got above 13 volts. Charging begins at 1050 rpm, ie where the charge indicator lamp turns off.

Did I mention the smoother running of the engine?

+1 on the Omega!!  Wonderful set up.  Works like a charm.

Hey trolle -- what advance curve setting are you using on yours?

Tell me more (everything) about the Omega. If what I've reads on the web, it bolts straight on and I don't have to take the old bean can stuff out.

Please bear in mind that my bike ('81) has shown no signs of an ignition failure but I'm petrified of it happening and leaving me stranded!

That's the nice thing about the Omega, you still have the stock stuff there as a backup.  Stephen Bottcher is the North American distributor for this unit.  I've met Stephen a couple of times at some informal rallys and can say he really believes in and backs his product.

Kudos for the Omega ignition system. Replaces all the beancan and advance weight system stuff. The PO of my R75/6 broke the nut off the end of the camshaft where the advancer mounts and welded it on -
I replaced the system with the Omega unit and have not had any problems.
Only downside I see is the limited compatability with an EnduraLast alternator upgrade. I know they have been made to work together but it was not plug-and-play.  YMMV

I am using #4 and the ignition is set with the magnet on the little wheel  aligned two or three mm~1/10" to the left of the middle of the stretch where the red diode on the Omega lights up. This gives a correct full advance with the Z in the hole at 3500 rpm (I am at work and not sure about the 3500, but it is in that vicinity). All my driving is between sea level and 120 m above and the engine revs willingly up to max - sometimes too willingly, but that is quite another matter  ::)

BTW I have removed all parts of the old ignition system except the beancan, which serves as an oil plug.
