New Project Bike
« on: May 13, 2009, 01:39:38 PM »
I have a new project bike a 1971 R75/5.  During the restoration I am considering having the engine overhauled by a shop that specializes in vintage airheads.  I am familiar with Bench Mark Works in Sturgis, MS.  Are there other shops in the US you would recommend?  I will be compiling a list of upgrades to perform during the restoration process (exp. valve seats for low lead fuel)  I would appreciate your recommendations on upgrades.

Wow, that is a great looking bike!  Congratulations on your find.  Those are interesting shorty pipes.  If you run with the hard bags do you run the risk of exposing the plastic to high exhaust temp?  The right bag on my R90/6 has a nice little 3x5 hole in the bottom of it where it nestled on the exhaust.

I use Boxers by Bruce (Davidson) in Pantego, TX for mechanical repairs beyond my fairly limited skills.  Of course there is always Perry's Motorcycles and Sidecars in Texas should you choose.  I do get my insurance through that shop.

This is where I go for anything I can't handle myself. Tom is a great guy and knows these machines inside and out. Its the only shop I have ever been to where he will let you watch what he is doing and explain it so you can "do it yourself next time". His words not mine.

I know that Max BMW (in Hampton, NH) is a BMW certified resto-specialist, but they will cost ya mucho dinero.

Those shorty mufflers must really "sing". Looks as if the rear axle nut is blackened a bit by the exhaust. Does it smoke a little?

2x on Boxers by Bruce. A gnarly sorta guy but an Airhead maestro.

Good question about the exhaust heat from the short pipes on the bags.  I didn't notice any damage to the bags when I picked up the bike but I need to go back and examine them more closely.  I plan to install replica mufflers during the restoration.

The left side carb is original, I believe the right side carb is from a R90/6.

Sometimes it smokes upon starting other times it doesn't.

Hey Stan, take a look at this possible source for parts.  http://www.bmwhucky.com/  One of the guys in the DFW BMW club just picked up a R75/5 and has it in Bruce Davidson's shop.  I think yours looks much cleaner.  I need to replace the mufflers on my R90/6 one of these days.  What are you thinking about getting for your R75?

I recently purchased Sito mufflers for my R65 from Motobins.  For the R75 I want to use mufflers that look stock.  I would consider another pair of Sitos or maybe SS mufflers.  Do you have a recommendation?

No, sure don't.  I have some aftermarkets on the R65 that came with the bike but there is no name on them.  I think the PO got them from Bruce.  I'll check with him.  They do have a little bit of a tinny sound at idle but sound good when the motor is over 3000rpm.
