Cheap, effective manometer

This DIY manometer was copied from an idea from the Power Parachutes company as a simple method to confirm Bing carb synchronization prior to flight. Some ultralight flyers mount the tubing to the airframe and do away with the yardstick.

All I had to buy was twelve feet of 3/16' ID vinyl tubing. Everything else was in the shop.

The fluid is BMW brand 7.5 wt. fork oil. The purple color is a bonus as it's easy to see. I figure that makes the stick an official BMW tool. Add enough oil to have about 12-inches in the tubing. Attach each open end to the vacuum ports on the bottom of both Bing carbs. Support the stick in a vertical position and you're ready to "simonize" those carbs.

What you have done is re-invented the $2 carb synchronizer!  I'm gonna have to break down and build one since my dual vacuum gauge brainstorm flopped...

...then shop the Big Box stores. I paid $0.23/foot for the tubing at Ace BMW Supply & Hardware. So my two-buck manometer cost me a bit more. They do work quite well.   Monte

I was thinking along similar lines in that they are probably glad he lives somewhere else!

Sign is from the 30's, design long ago rendered obsolete. Did I mention it fell off a truck. Every NE transplant that walks by while the bay door is up stops and chats when they see it. Now I want a California Rt 1 sign to go with it. Back to manometers, here is a different take on a differential manometer

There is a barbed fitting on the bottom of each carb, that you attach the hoses to.

Look for a closed-end rubber tube about 20mm long on the bottom of the carb body. Or, you may have a screw in the vacuum take-off tube, same location. FYI, It's an odd thread so don't lose it.

Using the DIY el cheapo grande manometer, both carbs should be hooked up during the synchronization operations.
