1979-1980 R65 Clutch stuff...
« on: April 28, 2009, 07:07:39 AM »
I was holding the hand of a friend over the phone this morning after he re-routed his clutch cable on his 1979 R100 and now his clutch doesn't work...and found a note in the Snowbum's (Bob Fleicher) technical website about the torque on the smaller flywheel bolts on our R65/45 1979-1980 flywheels.  The Clymer quotes 17 foot pounds which will twist the heads of our smaller bolts.  Bob say 88 inch-pounds (7.5 ft pounds) and some blue Locktite.  This corrects an oversight by BMW where they didn't publish a torque setting for the smaller bolts.

Everybody with the lighter clutch/flywheels made September 1980 and after ignore this note and use 17 foot-pounds.

Hey Justin Should this go in the Wiki section?  (What is the Wiki section?)  There should be a section for people with the 1979 and 1980 bikes that they should read when they first get here....

I have made a Wiki page with generally accepted torque values by fastener size.  If somebody wants to put together an R65 specific list of torque values they could be added.

Re: 1979-1980 R65 Clutch stuff... GRABBY CLUTCH

Hi All, thanks again for all your help with my 79 R65.
Got most of the throttle and carb issues worked out. Had a couple rides and today decided that the 50 plus mile ride was in order.
At the end of the ride got a very GRABBY CLUTCH!. Looked at snobum site and got a couple of gut wrenching possibilities (ie tranny shimming issues with 79's  and the less nighmarish tranny  input shaft lubrication).  Has anyone had any experience.
TRYING TO LOVE THE BIKE.....Thanks Fishypaws

Yes we are experienced.  Read the snowbum site carefully on this.  Put grease on the tranny input splines only and on the tip of the clutch actuating rod.  Do not put any grease inside the clutch friction plate splines like the picture in the Clymer manual.  You will F*&K half of your clutch with the grease when it slings out to the friction surface.  Also do the throwout bearing service while your at it.  Same chapter on the Snowbum site...

Doing the spline lube should make it less grabby.  How many miles on the bike?  When was spline lube last done?

This poor advise worth 2cents,

The "grabby" clutch on our 1980 was finally fixed with a new friction disc...

Hey guys....37,000 miles. I bought this '79 from a semi ham-fisted "non maintenancer". Throttle cables frayed, plug wires mega cracked, must have been parked for a year on the side stand with the petcock on, BUT complete, clean oil in gearage, newish clutch cable.

I am sure that not much was done to it in the last two years. Is there a WIKI page on the tranny input shaft maintenance? Do I have to JOIN the WIKI also? It wouldnt let me view any pages.
The 50 miler I took on it was lovely. I have faith that I could fall in love with the bike if I get the confidence in it!
Justin- Thanks for the BEWARE regarding grease and the clutch!!!!

Thanks, Mike.  I don't think I have enough pics of the various steps (on the same bike) to do a good writeup.
