Exaust failed Mot
« on: March 19, 2009, 05:38:55 PM »
When rebuilding i put new silencers on but thought i would be able to save a few bob by not changeing the downpipes.....one had a couple of pin holes near the clamp the silencers were sleved for 38 and 40 mm so i took out the sleve and fitted a 6 inch stainless sleve over the pipe into the silencer it clamped up well and was barely noticeable but the MOT guy has failed it ?? anyone else done any thing simular or are they just being jerks!!,

if the sleeve you used was a good piece of  tube and well fitted, then I can't see why it should be failed, they're being jerks. if the sleeve was just a roll of metal, not an actual tube,  then it ain't gonna pass.

If Texas' motor vehicle inspection was as tough as you guys have it, probably 80% of our bikes would be rejected. Really.

We also have a license plate and inspection classification for vintage motorcycles and cars; those +25 years old. Special plate and NO inspection required for the bikes. Will have to wait two more years for my Cabrio's shot at the vintage tag.

My R100RS riding buddy and co-worker uses a local shop to get his 1967 Chevy Malibu 'vert inspected. Ol' Jimmy just looks out the front door and asks Steve to honk the horn.

By the time he gets outta the car, the windshield sticker is ready! This is true... I was with him at the time.

Sorry for your hassles.

We don't have an annual vehicle inspection here in the Phoenix area, but the bike must be taken in on the month the registration needs to be renewed, and have an exhaust emissions test just like the 4 wheelers do.

The emissions test cost more than the annual registration renewal !!

It's only an idle test, and the limits are set quite high, so if you fail, there definitely is a problem with the bike.

Oregon's DMV has never seen either of my bikes.  Nor my car.  Nor my '58 Chevy pickup.  Maybe this state isn't so bad.

I should point out that I live out in the country; if I was in the Portland area I would have to pass at least emissions inspections.  Increasing population leads to decreasing freedom.

Ed,

I purchased my Z-3 from a dealer in Bend,OR., had the car shipped to my home in Arizona, to get a title and registration, the car had to go through a level 2 vehicle inspection, and emissions test,  the car had 14 miles on it.

I live just one county north of the DFW metro-mess and their 3 million+ peeps. The breeze is usually out of the south so we enjoy their pollution. As such, we have to pass an emissions test on all three of our cages. None on the three scoots.

The state inspection fee is only $12.50 but the emission test jacks the fee to $39.75. My F150 got its new sticker yesterday. The Cabrio is five months overdue. ;D  Yea, yea... I know. I have a wife to remind me.

We have property for our new home in Montague County, just northwest of here. No emissions test required. You can see millions of stars since there is absolutely no light pollution or smoggy air.

I'm probably wrong here but I thought you had to re-test at the station that failed it. As all MOTs are now logged online will the original test flag up a fail? If so, the ANPR cameras could pick you out. Glyn.

MOT eh, I wish I had their check list to do my own inspection, sounds very through and fussy. Wold MOT allow the additional sleeve if it had been braised [welded?] on to the existing pipe?
On the topic of inspections I too like Bob have had to submit to a level 2 inspection. Problem is that the cheesy decal with the FULL VIN is no longer ledgeable. I go again next month and have to prove that I didn't steal the bike. Sheesh!

Rich,

My R65 registration is due next month, I'm waiting to see if the bike is exempt from emissions testing, as I have collector insurance and historic vehicle plates on the bike .

My '79 Trans Am didn't require emissions testing this year when the registration came due in January.

The state of Arizona passed a law last year that exempts vehicles with collector insurance, and historic vehicle plates from emission testing.

This guy sounds like an asshole - what exactly was stated on the MOT Fail document ?

The 'Testers Bible' says :

A durable repair to an exhaust system which effectively prevents leaks is acceptable providing the system is structurally sound.

----

The only reasons for Exhaust failue are clear, and simple :

1a. Any part of the exhaust system missing or excessively deteriorated
1b. A leak in an exhaust system which causes excessive noise to be emitted
1c. An exhaust system mounting missing or one which is in such a condition that it does not fully support the exhaust system.

2. A silencer which is in such a condition or is of such a type that the noise emitted is clearly in excess of that which would be produced by a similar machine fitted with a standard silencer in average condition.

3. A silencer marked 'NOT FOR ROAD USE', TRACK USE ONLY' or similar words.

----

Inform him that you are making an appeal to VOSA, they don't like this as it impacts the test stations performance score over the year.

I live in a state of consternation - quite literally. South Australia is one of the few (only(?)) states in Australia that doesn't have any testing what-so-ever on cars and bikes.

While it is certainly a cheaper alternative to ya'all it does mean that SA has the oldest fleet of motor vehicles in the country. From memory I think it is about 12 years old. Quite a number of those cars should not be on the road.  >:(
