Battery does not seem to fit...
« on: February 26, 2009, 01:11:15 PM »
I ordered that battery and it does not fit. I called Regina with the part number provided. No Joy! Her book tells her that the battery listed for a R65LS 1978-1984 (that is all that comes up) is group # 51814 which she does not carry. Time to pay a restock fee and start over! :-/

What exactly does not fit?  I have two of them in two different bikes.  It's possible they changed suppliers and the new one is slightly larger?  Maybe some of the early years had a smaller battery box but I don't think so.

Er, perhaps a bigger hammer? I try to get dimensions when batt shopping, best to have a side by side comparison if possible.

When I originally ordered one of these I checked the dimensions and, although snug, they fit in the '80 and the '82.  Hopefully goomicoo will respond with exactly what doesn't fit and maybe some pix...

Battery I purchased is also a bit larger than battery mounting bracket - fine on the width but depth too great to seat in the bracket.  Mounting straps hold battery firm at angle, no problems so far.

The battery must have changed slightly from when I bought mine as they both fit, albeit with no slop, fully into the bottom of the box.  If it's only a small about 1/32" - 1/16", or so, probably some pliers could be used to tweak the bottom rear of the try to give the clearance.  If I had some pix I could say for sure.

Sorry for the late response. The Battery was too deep. About 3.25" and the tray is only 3" X 7". Regina told me that they were not going to carry Motorcycle batteries anymore. I ordered one from MK Battery in Anaheim Ca. and it came the next day. $99 shipping included but I had to pay Ca. tax as well. Perfect fit. I could have strapped the Gruber battery down at an angle I suppose but it just didn't seem the right thing to do. All is well (for now!)

I went to the Gruber website today, and checked the depth dimension on all of their batteries for motorcycles, and according to their specifications, none of their batteries will fit the R65, without modifying the battery box.

They must have changed suppliers, again, as the two I bought (that I listed part numbers for) fit my bikes fine, although snug.  I probably would have even used them if I'd had to do some minor modding for the price difference.   I'll delete the post.

Angry Bill made a post in the posting that Justin mentions the 5% discount at Gruber Power Services, he made the statement that the battery he received in the last week or so fit the battery box with no problem.

Bill, what part number battery did you get from Gruber ?

When I called, I gave them the part number Justin listed in the other post AND checked the dim's published before I ordered.  I haven't double checked anything since it came in other than to visually verify it fits in the battery cage.
