R65 missing
« on: June 06, 2026, 04:43:10 AM »
Well the R65 now is running strong without a troubling little hitch or miss.  I chased that little miss all around.  Bean can, electrical, carbs, gas filters, balancing  etc all the standard stuff.  No joy.  Finally bought some cheap testing gauges and did a compression check and that was ok.  Then did a leak down.   Not so good.   Pulled the heads cylinders and pistons and took them to Boxer Works in Watkinsville Georgia.  Nate says "bad valves, recessed, common problem on your year bike."   He had the next door machine shop completely rebuild the heads and Murrey, one of his mechanics, recommended that I change the cylinders and pistons at the same time because of general wear and ordered the 860 Sieben Rock parts.

I did the assemble work because I am a certified shade tree mechanic.  Bike stated first roll over.  I have started the break in cycles and did a first ride.   The old bike did just fine so I probably had all the parts back in the right order.

Boxer Works will probably be around for a long time because the owner charges for their work and it was not cheap.  I am happy with the outcome.

What year bike do you have?

That's what I was afraid you were going to say. That's the same year as my bike!

Funny you posted this.
Just dropped off my LS with the 860 kit after the break in period and he's going to change the jets around on the Dyno to see which is better 142's or the 140's, change the oil and filter check the valves. And see if we need to leave them a little loose.

We started with the  recommended .15 intake and .20 exhaust. He's checking to see if either of those closed up within the 600 mile break in period. He said he's going to check the clearances and either set to .10 and .20 or if they tightened up run .15 and .25 possibly. In any case I can let you know more Monday what set at.
After their set he's checking out the main jets and switch between 142 or 140 it's been running lean. I've gotten 38 and 39 mpg during the break in period.

Good morning Bob, so the valves tightened up substantially. The intake went to .10 from .15 and the exhaust went to .15 from .20, so we reset them to the .15 intake and .20 exhaust I'll check them in 1500 miles and report back then. Here's a picture of the Dyno run holding onto the 50hp.
Waiting until Sunday to pick up because it's going to rain all week and he's getting those washers for the crash bar since it's basically impossible to get those vibration bushings, unless you fabricated them on your own or bought them from MCmaster- Carr.
Ride safe.
