What is the Best Spark Plug?
« on: August 17, 2025, 08:05:08 AM »
1980 BMW R65. I just replaced wiring harness, added Dynatek 3.0 coil, new plug wires, new Enduralast electronic ignition.  What are the best spark plugs?

If you have the original fitment resistor plug caps then you want non resistor plugs such as  Bosch W5DC, NGK BP7ES, Denso W22EP-U.

Those are all non resistor plugs. If you can only find the resistor equivalents then ideally you should use non resistor plug caps although its not a big deal if your caps are the original 1K ohm type.

Do the new ignition instructions say anything about how much resistance should be in the HT circuit ?

With owning my '81 R65 for going on 45 years and using a range of different plugs . I have stayed with the NGK BP7ES .most auto parts stores and motorcycle dealers stock these .
When I was on vacation in 1996 in the Boston area found an independent motorcycle repair shop that was going out of business.Bought a set of four Bosch plugs they were platinum and four ground electrodes can't remember the part number .
What I found with these plugs after one year of use, was the center electrode was worn down below the ceramic insulator . It had been level with the insular when new .
It was difficult to get an accurate measurement, but it looked to be about the same as the plug gap .
The bike ran and started with no issue .
I wouldn't use anything exotic on these bikes .
As a once inglorious leader of Germany once stated that bikes were ' farm implements '. .

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

This is the link to the new wires I bought from euromotoelectrics. they are made for the R65.  There is no info about resistor or non-resistor. What do you think would be the best spark plug to use?

Hello,
We have small engines not that powerful. We have very good gazoline today without lead and this enhance spark plug life.
As we do not need very very strong spark as in the very fast motorcycle engine (those running in the 14k RPM range), the stock spark plugs are perfectly fine and last long.
So the stock BOSCH or NGK or Denso spark plugs will ensure proper engine performance   ;D
