Gear lever shaft bearing
« on: April 09, 2024, 04:23:12 AM »
I removed the gear lever oil seal but noticed that the gear lever shaft bearing (n 28) was broken and took it out.

Now I can't find gear lever shaft bearing (n 28) in any catalogue.
Can anyone tell me how to look for it and find it?
Does it have its own code?

I attach a photo of the gearbox, the gear lever shaft bearing is number 28, behind the oil seal of the gear lever (29)

I can't see any photos attached to posts, don't know why !!

Here's a page from RealOEM.com .
Does this help you out any ??

https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=0363-USA-07-1979-248-BMW-R65&diagId=23_0269

Reading the description, it looks like the needle bearing can only be used with an upgraded shift lever .

My R65's all have a plain brass/bronze bushing/bearing, looks like that it's no longer available from BMW .

I hope you see the photo now

No, it isn't available on realoem.
The photo is from a manual, but the piece is no longer there on realoem.

It is a plastic spacer on which the gear lever seal ring rests  n28

"Expert" here. That part is a 'thing', but I'm not convinced exactly what it is: https://bmwparts.calmoto.com/p/Bmw__R100S/Joint-bearing/42786597/23111233383.html

A great number of bearings and seals on these bikes are standard (bearing shop parts bin) metric types. When I replaced the seal on my bike, there certainly wasn't a lip for a seal to sit on, you push it in until it is just below the outer case edge. Can we have a piccy of the broken item?

I've replaced the shift shaft lever seal on three of my R65's and never found anything like that .
Sometimes, if you can't find a part on the R65 parts catalog, going to the R100 bike of the same year and it may be there .
Also on installing the seal, you need to get it in straight .
I had the transmission from my '81 R65 rebuilt in 2007, when  got it installed, I could up shift to 5th gear, but could not downshift .
There seal was installed crooked .

it's really him

The upper lip is where the oil seal rests.
Hard rubber and inside it has a small steel cylinder that acts as a bearing for the gear lever

Thanks for the code

I've seen some photos of the bore with a roller bearing inside, instead of this obsolete one.

I've sent a few requests to stores in Germany but so far nothing
In recent years it has been really inconvenient to order in the USA from Italy. Duties and increasingly slower shipments.

I'm thinking of replacing this rubber insert with a roller bearing......but that's another story......

it is so hidden that it seems incorporated into the gearbox.

it was ruined and the oil seal did not adhere well

but I think it doesn't need to be replaced often, probably the previous owner had played a bit with the gear lever by forcing it

Many seals are kept crooked due to haste
it is for this reason, and perhaps also because I have run out of money, that I prefer to do it myself
