Camshaft 248
« on: March 26, 2024, 09:42:22 AM »
Hi, I noticed on my '79 R65, after inserting the camshaft, that the cams are not exactly centered under the cam followers. When they get up they only touch the cam followers halfway, three out of four.
Why?

My camshaft: 130 335267 248.

Perhaps this eccentricity will rotate cam followers.

I don't understand why the cams are not positioned completely under the tappets.

The best position is the first, towards the clutch, the intake of the right cylinder, here the contact is almost complete, then the other cams have contact with the tappets almost at 1/2 or 3/4

I thought I had the camshaft assembled incorrectly but the signs of wear/rubbing on the cams tell me they have always worked this way.

Hello,
Again, this is clever engineering from BMW. The cam followers are stuck in a way that force them to rotate.
This has the advantage to wear them more regularly  and make the valve pusher to rotate also, keeping them better also.
IT has also a consequence on the wear of the cam lobes. If something goes in between the lobe and the pusher, it will be cleaned up by the rotation.
So if you have installed the camshaft properly, nothing to worry about and fear.
P.S. : the camshaft and pushers on my 1982 R65 has been running for near 280 000 km and is still perfectly in the tolerance, so perfectly serviceable....
IMHO, this make for perfect design and workmanship.

I was used to the '80 HD engineering but once again I have to admit BMW wins over HD.

Thanks for the explanation
